The Role
I did not enjoy it to begin with. Although the placement is listed as "engineering placement" I did little to no engineering work (I haven't done any "actual engineering" for the whole year.) At the start this disappointed me, however I have found some enjoyment in the job I do although it is completely unrelated to my degree and not really an engineering role.
I initially found it difficult to talk to my colleagues as I was unhappy with the job. This has changed within the last few months as above.
Although I am meant to have a mentor as a placement student, I have never had one. I have received some support from my manager and others in the department but they are also very busy with their own work as often haven't had time to give me the support I maybe needed at times
To begin with I was not very busy and am still not very busy at times. This is then followed by spells of being very busy, there has never been a consistent workload
I was given a lot of responsibility, rather than being a placement student I have actually taken over the job of someone who left the company. This along with having no mentor means that I had a lot of responsibility in the plant.
Although the job is not related to my degree and the job I've been doing is not an engineering role, I have learnt project management skills which will help me in my degree
The Company
The general atmosphere has been good most of the time
It seemed that there was little to no thought put into my placement. I am a mechanical engineering student doing a civils based role (in which I have no experience) without a mentor to guide me. Instead of being in a supporting role I have just taken over from someone that retired. There has been no clear plan of me learning anything to do with the work I am doing and for a lot of the time have had to rely on contractors knowledge to get work done.
I can book on to any training course I like
Above 25 days holiday
I don't think I'll come back to Nissan UK
The Culture
I have had no contact with any placement students
Living is a lot cheaper in Sunderland than where I am from so this makes living on the fairly generous wage quite easy
I have no experienced this
