About You
Having not studied law I was not sure what to expect, but I only have positive things to say. The work I did was varied and interesting, and most people I came across were more than happy to explain things so that I understood them better. The two weeks also lets you get to know your fellow vac schemers and the trainees much better, all of whom were really nice!
I did feel valued, even though some of the work I did would probably not contribute that much to the firm's overall business. My feedback was always valued and I felt the lawyers I worked with were genuinely interested in what I had to say.
I felt I had a lot of guidance. Whenever I was asked to do something, and I got it slightly wrong I was immediately shown how to improve and make it better. The lawyers I worked with were all very friendly and more than happy to share any wisdom they had with me.
It is difficult to say for sure. I will say that the work I have done over the two weeks has slightly prepared me for any work I will take on when I am a trainee. However, there is still a long way, in terms of legal skills, for me to go. It has made more familiar with a more corporate environment and that experience is invaluable.
The Company
We had enough time to actually do some proper legal tasks whilst also having daily talks on specific areas of the law by people who worked in the departments. This structure enabled me to have a great insight into all the firms practice areas.
Very friendly and welcoming. Seems like a great place to work and I think most people working there genuinely enjoy it.
The firm invests in you a fair amount given that they give you both a trainee buddy and an associate supervisor. They will try and give you a fair insight into how Stephenson Harwood trains you but of course you cannot learn everything in two weeks.
I think the vacation scheme massively helped me in terms of knowing what it is to be a trainee at Stephenson Harwood. Most of the trainees you come across are more than happy to tell you about their experience at the firm. Two weeks is also ample time to experience for yourself the friendly culture of the firm.
It helped me understand it a lot. Through speaking to my supervisors they told me exactly how to approach a client in terms of being straight talking. I also was there long enough to see just how friendly everyone is and how eager they are for you to enjoy the company's culture as much as they do.
I was already very sure I wanted to be a lawyer but it has helped me in terms of what areas I may want to practice in during my training.
Everything Else
The money was good at 370 pounds per week. The experience I got was invaluable.
Lots of opportunities to network with the current trainees. You are also sat in a room with an associate and a partner who are more than happy to answer any questions you have about the firm.
The Firm put on a number of drinks including one at a snooker/pool bar. They were very fun and offered good downtime from the work.
We were told about the firm's various sports teams and choir. We also had the chance to do a legal 10km walk for charity.
I would absolutely recommend this to a friend.
