The Role
The overall experience was genuinely made by the people I worked with. Though the job role can get monotonous and daily rental isn’t the most exciting I think that a lot of the people that have or will stay with the company are doing it with hopes to progress much further up in the company and I do think job satisfaction increases with every promotion achieved.
It is very much a team work environment in that you really do feel obliged to come to work and do well to make your colleagues lives easier. I think Enterprise is impressive in that as such a big company has created a small family business feel in each individual branch in that even with taking time off and being unproductive you feel obliged to work hard so that it doesn’t negatively impact your colleagues.
If you need/ want support there are so many different avenues to get it which is important if you are struggling and if you aren’t the most confident// don’t want to get on the wrong side of your management there’s also an anonymous ethics portal online where you can complain about things you feel are unethical// unfair.
We’re a very busy branch which is the best part in that there’s always something to do and you’re never bored twiddling your thumbs. This helps because even though it’s long hours it does make the day go quicker. If you’re the sort of person that will start daydreaming when always in one place this is the one for you - there’s always something to do.
The job is what you make of it you can have as much or as little responsibility as you like and you genuinely are in charge or pursuing what you want to do. This can be difficult on the internship placement scheme as there’s no possibility of promotion which isn’t great for motivation but if you do want to come back then you might feel motivated to make a good impression.
I don’t think the skills I’ve devleoped are indifferent to what I could gain in any retail role, however, if you want to go into management this may help you in the future. I do think if you want office skills e.g. excel skills etc this isn’t the role for you as it is much more customer based and a lot of the skills you learn are specific to enterprise. If you aren’t a confident speaker and are looking to work on expressing yourself better then this would be a good place to start.
The Company
The atmosphere in the branch was very good as working with such a small team for so many hours means that you really get to know your colleagues and allows you to build good relationships with them which only furthers your success within the branch. There is never a dull moment at Enterprise and should you choose this programme I’m sure you’ll come away with lots of stories.
The internship is well structured and there are training programmes at head office throughout all stages of the year which are organised but in terms of specific progress in the company and making sure people stay on track it is much more independent and if you want to progress you need to chase it which makes it more rewarding in the end if you do well off of your own back.
The company invest a lot in new in terms of enterprise specific training and knowledge, however, in terms of external qualifications there aren’t any which would benefit you or could be transferred straight to a different company. Overall the role wouldn’t be for you if you were looking to go into the finance sector because none of the office skills e.g. excel, data analysis + reporting etc are covered on the level at which they would need to be in a graduate level role.
Company Parties/Events
I think it’s always important to not burn bridges and though I have met some amazing people over the course of the year I wouldn’t say the idea of going back to that specific role would be a prospect I would look forward to. With that being said I think for a lot of people the idea of being able to graduate and go straight into an assistant manager role where you earn commission based on the success of the branch would be very appealing.
The Culture
With my branch having so many interns during the same period it has really helped my experience in that I don’t feel alone when the role gets tough and it helps to know there are people going through the exact same thing as you. Socially there are always events and get together both in the branches and across the whole area which is always nice to network and expand.
Living and socialising is cheap as it is a university town. With the enterprise role it doesn’t matter where you live because there will always be a branch relatively near to you that you can work at and this helps a lot particularly in placement year to save money as you can live at home and just commute to work.
There’s much better places for a night out however again as stated before this doesn’t matter too much as you are relatively near to home because your placement role will be based in a location near to where you live. Either way you will end up out at some points with your branch and it’s not the place it’s the company you have that’ll make it.
There are so many opportunities out of work. Enterprise is big on charity for example this year there has been a lot of fundraising for children in need also people always taking part and attending LGBT marches alongside this enterprise tries to help the community around them and said there was always a chance to volunteer in your local area.
