About You
I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this summer scheme. What made the experience both less daunting and more beneficial was the attention to detail in planning our time at the company. The combination of joining one team for the 4 weeks and mixing this with networking opportunities and talks by various departments ensured that we got the absolute most out of the experience.
By providing numerous opportunities to network within the company, whether with the other interns, the current graduates or the Directors, this provided a sense that you were strongly valued by the company. It ensured you were not just a number and a CV, but that the personal and human elements were taken seriously as well.
There was fantastic guidance and support throughout the 4 weeks. You are supplied with a mentor who is the person you can touch base with at all points in the day, and someone you can become very familiar with and rely on for this support. Furthermore, the HR department were always on hand to answer any questions and help with any queries. A member of the HR team was always present at any tours, talks and networking events, which provided a sense of reassurance and familiarity in the new environments we were put in.
I was placed in a team where only one person had completed their APCs or were going to complete their ACPs. As a result, I felt that the knowledge and skills I learned were not necessarily directly tailored to what I had hoped. However, this was balanced by working for an extremely inspirational and pioneering start-up company within Savills, which provided a different kind of lesson in itself.
The Company
The Summer Scheme was extremely well-structured, providing numerous different opportunities to network, learn, ask questions and meet the other interns. The only suggesting I would have is that you rotate between two teams, which I believe would be more beneficial. This would allow you to gain the skills and knowledge from two different teams, whilst having a sample of the various different paths you can take in a Property degree
The atmosphere was all round extremely welcoming and friendly. Considering Savills is a service based company their client facing culture certainly continued in the office space. As a result, I was able to be put in contact with numerous people and easily feel confident enough to meet them and ask any questions needed.
The extent to which they considered our training and development was fantastic. For example getting us special access to the Cambridge land Society talk led by the CEO. This allowed us a chance to gain first hand experience and knowledge about the industry through a different avenue. They also organised departmental talks, which allowed us to learn about different teams that we had not had a chance to work with over the month.
I thought that whilst the insight was extremely useful, it would have been greatly improved if we could have rotated through different teams. This would have allowed a better opportunity to get a flavour of the day to day work and life involved in other teams, which at Savills varies significantly.
It was absolutely fundamental to understanding about the company culture. Without doing an internship there is no way you could get the same grasp of the culture. Through meeting different teams, the HR department, Directors and social events, even to the lay out of the office all add to this culture.
It was extremely useful in knowing that Property is the industry I would love to be in. Everyone was also extremely helpful in putting you in contact with someone who you could have a coffee with and chat to them about various other parts of the business. However, again I think this could have been improved by rotating into at least one other team during the scheme, just to get a better insight into the various and numerous different aspects of a possible career in Property.
Everything Else
They paid us very fairly and considerately for the internship. As an intern I would have not expected any more than we were offered.
The opportunities were numerous and the HR department ensured this felt smooth and natural. One networking event involved meeting the Directors and this was made compulsory ensuring that even if you were to struggle you were brought into an environment where everyone wanted to meet you and have meaningful discussions, helping you to make useful connections within the business.
The interns were included in the Savills Summer Party which made you feel both wanted within the Company, whilst also providing excellent networking opportunities coupled with a social event. Furthermore, the HR team ensured there were a number of drinks scheduled for the interns, which allowed a chance to get to know the other interns on the scheme.
The information was all provided either by your team or the HR department regarding activities to get involved in. Furthermore, within your own team there were opportunities to get involved in activities outside or work. Finally, we had a current graduate give us a presentation on life as a graduate, and this was extremely informative about activities, societies and events.
Yes I would certainly recommend this insight to a friend. The time has flown by and you meet a lot of new faces, learn a lot and I believe that it would be very hard to get a Graduate scheme place without this invaluable insight into the company and the industry.
