The Role
I have very much enjoyed my time on the Savills Summer Scheme. It has helped me to develop an increased understanding of the industry which I wish to enter after graduating from my degree, and more specifically the RICS pathway which I wish to pursue. The tours, departmental talks and social events have helped me to make the summer scheme especially enjoyable.
I leave the scheme feeling as if my contribution to the team has been appreciated, as it was my aim from the beginning of the scheme to assist my colleagues as much as I possibly could. I have completed tasks for a number of my colleagues and they have all been grateful for my efforts - in this sense I have felt as if my contribution to the team has been of value.
My assigned mentor has been brilliant throughout the scheme, helping me to settle in to the team very quickly and was always willing to answer my questions! Aside from my mentor, other members of the team have given me advice and guidance throughout the scheme and I am extremely grateful for this.
My workload varied from day-to-day, some days I was extremely busy and others I had very little to do. This is largely due to the fact that my team could only provide me with work based on the current projects that the team are working on, which varies from week to week.
I feel as if I was given the right amount of responsibility during the placement, neither too little nor too much - the majority of the responsibility I was given was in completing the tasks I was set to a good standard, a responsibility to do a good job for my team.
Massively! Undertaking the placement has helped me to realise how much the theoretical knowledge I have learnt during my degree is of crucial importance to the property industry. The knowledge I have picked up on development and investment will be especially useful in completing my final year, where the dissertation will be based on a development project.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was exciting and relaxed - with the constant buzz of business being conducted. The only difficult thing was that it was sometimes hard to concentrate with all the noise!
The Savills Summer Scheme is extremely well organised - the Graduate Team put a lot of effort into providing social and education events which really enhanced the experience I have had.
I feel as if I have developed personally just through undertaking the scheme, but the departmental talks were especially useful for my own personal development - being able to gain a better understanding of what areas of the business I am most interested in.
Company Parties/Events
I leave the scheme with the view that Savills is an exceptional business, made up of extremely nice and knowledgeable people. Additionally, the graduate scheme provided by the firm is one of the best in the industry and this is extremely appealing.
The Culture
A number of social events were organised throughout the scheme, providing me with the opportunity to socialise and compare experiences with my fellow summer scheme students.
It was quite expensive, largely due to the cost of commuting and buying lunch everyday. However, coming from London, I was already aware of how expensive it is to live and socialise within London.
There is a large range of nightlife around Oxford Circus, but much of this is rather expensive. Also, most nights during the scheme I would prefer to go home and relax rather than going out.
The tours provided by the scheme were both enjoyable and educational. Additionally, going on site visits and attending meetings provided opportunities outside of work.
