The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my placement. Every day was different which I loved and it meant it wasn't repetitive and I wasn't doing the same thing and it also gave me a diverse experience across the business. In my role I was involved with my other departments and liaised with many different people.
Very valued. I'm convinced I had the best team at the society. Everyone was very laid back whilst still getting work done. There was always a good atmosphere and good conversations alongside working. We also went on many social events and nights out and still keep in touch to this day.
There are many different paths in which you are given support. Early talent (apprentices, undergraduates and graduates) are assigned a mentor to help with anything from personal support to work support. Line managers are also great for seeking support regarding any work you have got that you may be struggling with. There's also the early talent team for any support required.
There were very few days where I had little to do. There were always little queries or issues keeping me on my toes and that filled the gaps. You will also be given much longer tasks and projects to work on that will take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks to complete BUT this doesn't mean it repetitive, the project will constantly change and evolve so doesn't get boring.
I was given huge amounts of responsibility. If I was unsure about any task I would be given guidance or a way of doing it BUT the society is huge about innovation and improvement so any area or task that can be improved or done a different way is very valued and looked highly upon.
I cannot advise you to do a placement enough, even more so at NBS. The experience and skills I have learn here are literally skills for life. It has made me much much more aware of how a building society operates and how everything intertwines and works as one for a single purpose. The hands on experience I have gained here will definitely serve as a big advantage in my final year at university.
The Company
Very very relaxed, friendly and chilled. Everybody gets their work done but there's always good chatter and conversations throughout the office. The best days are usually FUNd Days in which money is raised towards the community fund and gets donated to various charities. Activities on these days include tombolas, quizzes, mystery boxes etc.
Very well organised both by the university and NBS. I was constantly emailed to keep me updated on the progress of my new role and contracts/paperwork were sent out very promptly. There is an entire department committed to early talent (placement and apprentice students) so it is very well looked after.
The society definitely understood what my aims were and what I wanted to experience whilst on placement and were very accommodating. They assigned me tasks and projects that were relevant to my degree and also varied to give me a range of different experiences. I usually worked alongside different departments to maximise experience.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
This will definitely be the first place I look to for vacancies when I finish university.
The Culture
Newcastle is the capital known for nightlife and clubbing. There are tonnes of good clubs due to the number of students in the area. There are also usually events on per night usually Monday-Friday but some on Saturday. I guarantee Newcastle will be one of the best nights out you will experience.
Always. You get 2 paid volunteer days per year in which you can go and help charities or local businesses and get a day off work whilst doing it! There's also the more social side which is via Staff Association in which you pay £2 out of you pay a month and you get tonnes of discounts on events. Definitely recommend.
