The Role
The 2 main aspects are the very steep learning curve and the very collegial working environment. Indeed with two rotations and one training week, the programme is perfectly suited to maximise the experience over the course of the summer. It wouldn’t be as enjoyable without a good working environment. At Citi I found all my team members to be very approchable and open to answer any question.
Even if it is not easy to involve an summer intern that stays 5 or 4 weeks in your team, everybody in my team was very proactive in trying to involve me as much as possible in live deals and different activities of the deal process. I was even allowed in my Managing Director’s office during some client calls!
Throughout the entire internship I was in relation with various teammates at different levels of the hierarchy, from Analyst to Director, who I was reporting to for various projects. HR was also super easy to contact if you were to have any issue during the program, so no problem here.
Obviously it’s very difficult to be staffed from day one as an intern, especially in more technical teams that are more modeling intensive, but I still got to be staffed on a live deal. I also want to note that you have a lot of compliance training to do so you won’t have time to be bored,
Of course I didn’t get a lot of responsibility because I was only there for a few weeks, but I was still surprised by how eager everybody was to involve me and expose me to different aspects of the work. Overall I think I was more involved than what I was expecting prior to the internship, even if it was often as a witness.
I think the best skill I learnt, I mean the one that will be the most applicable to my day to day life when I return to studying, is probably managing my time. There is so many times as a student where you procrastinate or wait to do simple tasks, whereas during my internship, I had to be effective if I wanted to do my tasks. I think I really got better in that aspect.
The Company
Probably the best part of the internship.
Very well organized, Citi is a big bank and they have a lot of interns every year.
Really enjoyed the training, especially excel.
