International Television Production Finance Intern Review

My work placement has been an amazing experience. I've enjoyed learning and interacting with both my team and the international correspondents within our department. When I think back on my time spent working here, I've found that I've developed a lot of business awareness and finance understanding! I look forward to going back to university and applying this new knowledge to my coursework.

There has not been a time where I've felt undervalued. I help support my teams monthly tasks and they are all appreciative because of this. There is also a very entertaining social aspect to my team. With our 'banter' and our celebration parties! Being invited to all these events allowed me to meet new people from all over the company.

I felt that the guidance I received was very balanced. I was given the freedom to try and solve problems myself, to organise my work and to plan my schedule by myself. However, if I needed help or if there was a deadline I knew my manager would be there to help/inform me of the best course of action. Our weekly catch ups allowed us to be informed of each others work and helped us estimate when the next lot of tasks would be added to our 'inbox'.

Working in finance we tend to have a reoccurring cycle of busy and less busy periods. This allowed us to predict when we would need additional work during the down times of the month! So there was a few days every so often when I wasn't sure what to do but as long as I thought ahead I could put aside some work that I could come back to on these days. On a similar note, if I asked my team a lot of the time they had tasks I could work on for them.

Responsibility wise, I had quite a lot. However, if I ever got overwhelmed there was always someone on had that could help me. This support net let me get on with my work without the added pressure of the fear of failure. This was in no way a tea-and-coffee placement.

While working here, I've found that I've developed a lot of skills that I can use both at university and in my future career life. In particular, I feel more confident for when I apply for jobs in the future since I've been on both sides of the table. I've developed my own professional appearance which I can once again use in later career life. Time management with all my deadlines as well as predicting upcoming events/workloads I can apply to my last year of university which should help me prepare for my final exams!

My office is in a unique situation. Our main office is being renovated so we (as in my team and a few other teams) are currently situated outside our main office which creates a barrier between us and the rest of the warner employees. Despite this, within our temporary office we have such a calm and friend atmosphere! while everyone made sure their work was all done, we tend to put on our own events and activities - its loads of fun. For example, we had a team building activity afternoon which involved the whole floor being split into 6 teams and going on a treasure hunt around London. As you can imagine, hilarity ensues.

I found that the initial start period could use some more organising as well as the end. At the beginning I hadn't received any of my access to the systems so there wasn't too much that I could do. I was lucky as the intern I was replacing had an extended contract so I had extra time to be shown how to do my job but other interns only had one week which they couldn't do a lot on since access hadn't been given. Same with the new intern replacing me.

There were a good amount of personal training and development workshops specifically for interns which was a nice chance to learn more. Other then just the intern ones, we had this week period called personal development week where you could book onto sessions which was encouraged. Within my office there were opportunities for additional training as well. Basically, there was a lot of chances to sign up for development workshops should you desire it.

While there is no graduate scheme we can try and 'jump on' from our placement, upon request we can receive emails about job opportunities for after we finish our university degree. I would love to come back and work here again after I've finished my course so this is incredibly helpful - not to mention the fact we already have contacts within the company thanks to the placement!

While I was not part of it myself, there was constant social activities going on that the interns arranged amongst themselves. This included drinks after work, pay day party, clubbing on weekends, Christmas party and more. Meeting up for lunch was also a common occurrence for the interns as well as cross office conversations or collaborations.

Expensive! Cost of living in London is quite high. I knew it would cost more before I moved but I was still shocked about a lot of the prices. I can't comment much on socialising around the office since every time my team and I went out for drinks or a meal they wouldn't let me pay. Such a lovely thing for them to do!

Around our offices area there is a good amount of pubs as well as some nice places for dinner. There are also some clubs within 20 minute walking distance or a short bus journey. All in all, shouldn't be too worried about the nightlife around the office as the nightlife of after work is normally a few pints before heading home to prepare for the next day of work.

There was a bunch of activities you could volunteer for. There is an office football team, in the near future a netball team and rounders team. Non sporting activities included a volunteer environmental day where you go and help plant trees. Then, there is always the social activities you can organise with your team! One of ours was going out after work to participate in a Harry Potter quiz.
