The Role
Great to be doing a placement at the same time than around 120 university students. However, they were doing a placement at the same time than having a huge amount of university course work and exams. It led to an absence of social life among the Industrial placement students. The site of Stevenage is also slightly out of town and there was not a lot of social within the lab.
Great guidance from my supervisor and other members of the team. It took me around 3 months to get used to the machines and equipment around the lab and GSK site more generally. Lack of independence was quite annoying at the beginning but it felt better after Christmas (placement started in late august)
Workflow was quite hard to get it right at the beginning as I am working in a team that is receiving work in "big batches". I felt quite bored at the beginning and took this as an opportunity to do more side projects. Second part of the year was slightly busier but still very do-able.
I had great responsibilities during my placement year as I was handling precious and limited resources on a daily basis. It was nice to be accountable for some chemistry and be carrying my own experiments rather than doing work on behalf of someone. I have been helpful in identifying possible drug candidates.
This year was a gap year for me so it was expecting a bit of more. I had the feeling that I could have gained the same skills in 6 months only. It felt that I was a bit wasting my year out of uni from time to time. But it has also been great to realise I did not see myself working in a lab full time.
