The Role
The internship at Bosch was a very enjoyable experience, where I learnt a lot of new things relevant to the course I am studying. The tasks I carried out were also very relevant for me, and I was able to gain new knowledge as well as applying my own knowledge to the tasks given to me.
Whilst working at Bosch, I noticed that nearly everybody is reliant on their colleagues to aid them with their own jobs. This makes you feel more valued in the workplace as there is a good social atmosphere in the office, where you can ask anybody for help with a task.
The support given by management was great. Whenever I had a problem I could easily locate a manager and ask them for help. However, due to the busy nature of the office, the managers were not always available and sometimes they could be pretty hard to get hold of in person.
During my time at Bosch I was given a project to complete, which took up most of my time. To complete the project, it lasted the whole term of my internship, and as the project was fairly complicated, I would say I as fairly busy. As my project was going to be used in the workplace once completed, it had to be perfect.
Whilst working here, I was given a project of designing a project management system, which once completed, would actually be used in the office by managers and other colleagues. I would say the responsibility was fairly high, as the I had to make sure the project was done to a high standard.
With the project I was given, I was able to largely enhance my current skills, especially in Javascript. The skills I developed here, I can use when back studying at Uni and will give me a good advantage for my final year. I was also able to use my existing skills, whilst working here.
The Company
There was a generally very good atmosphere in the office, where all colleagues are working along side each other. However at times it does get a bit quiet, which can be good when getting work done. The general environment was very chilled out, and everyone here was approachable and friendly.
The internship itself wasn't set up very well, as it took a few weeks to sort out my payroll and contract. However, that wasn't necessarily due to the company, as my internship here was very last minute and eventually was sorted out perfectly, with the company being very accommodating for me with the dates i worked and for holidays/days off.
The company provided me with my own laptop, with a whole index of programs and applications to use, which allowed me to progress when working in my particular field. However, as the company is very busy and working tight deadlines, it was hard for them to personally invest time into my development.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
The idea of working here in the future is pretty appealing. One main appeal is the opportunity to travel to different places and different countries, with plants and customers all over the world. There is also a need for more graduates to join the company, as the workforce is an ageing workforce.
The Culture
Whilst I was here on placement I was the only uni student on placement in my area, therefore there wasn't much interaction with other students.
The cost of the area was fairly normal, with many supermarkets and shops nearby. The company canteen was also very cheap here, and offered good value for money. Also, as an employee of Bosch, we are offered very good sales on items. Theres also good socialising in the area, with a gold course down the road!
The location of the office wasn't in a city centre so wasn't much to do at night, however it isn't too far from Manchester city centre, which in my humble opinion has one of the best night scenes in the UK ;) There is a couple bars that are local.
Not that I was aware of.
