Business Rental Admin intern Review

I really enjoyed working for Enterprise RAC last summer in their UK head office in Nottingham. I was given a lot of responsibility, regular feedback, and the office was friendly between departments and levels of management. I enjoyed the work I was doing and seeing the results of my efforts was very rewarding.

I received regular praise and thanks from other colleagues in my department, and they were always happy to hand work over to me. It was nice to work somewhere where the people had the confidence in me to produce high quality work from the start. I was also asked to help out with things in other departments occasionally, indicating how much a team culture is important at Enterprise RAC. Colleagues were also very eager to help me if I had a personal problem, giving me the option to fit work around my own personal life.

From the beginning, the work was very hands on, but my supervisor gave me a few days to mostly watch and take notes on the processes. She had also prepared some of her own notes to aid me when she wasn't around. The support was so great that, by the time of my performance review, I was told to stop second-guessing myself in tasks as I knew what I was doing. My manager became a trustworthy figure that I could go to with any concerns or questions. From the first day, I was made to feel part of the team and knew I could turn to anybody for any support.

SO BUSY. There were perhaps a couple of weeks towards the end of the summer where work had calmed down. For the majority of the summer, a lot of work was coming in. I was given complete autonomy in tasks and complete control of how my day panned out. It was up to me to prioritise the workload throughout the week. I managed to figure out my own schedule throughout the weeks that would allow me to be most productive each day. I've given a 10-star rating on this aspect because I personally enjoyed having so much to do; however, I do think it could be too much for others. At the same time, I know that if I found that I had too much to handle, I would have been given relevant support.

SO MUCH. On the second week of the internship my supervisor was on leave, so I was really trusted to get work done. I had her contact details should I have any questions, and had regular check-ins from my manager, but for the most part I was left to my own devices. The amount of responsibility given to me was so rewarding and really gave me a positive view of what I am capable of.

Understanding the intricacies of the business was very useful, as prior to this I had only worked on the customer-service side of retail. It gave me the courage to try a new industry that I knew nothing about the following summer, and really refined my time-keeping and organisation skills. Speaking to a variety of colleagues (at all levels of management) and clients helped me build professional relationships, and this has really helped me in every aspect of life since, and I now feel confident at networking.

The office was very pleasant with all departments in one open plan office. During my time there wasn't much of a social scene outside of the office. Everyone was encouraged to take lunch breaks, and colleagues often sat in the kitchen and ate together. I didn't meet a single person that didn't want to chat, and I was genuinely sad to leave.

Of all aspects of this review, this was the lowest point. The internship I did was new to the business, and generally designed to help them manage the workload. As such, there wasn't really a structure. I didn't receive any formal training/an intro to the business until mid-August, but I started on the 2nd of July. However, my supervisor gave me a lot of guidance in that first week. My finish date was completely negotiable, and I ended up staying until mid-September (and also did some casual work for a couple of months beyond this!), which I appreciated.

At the end of the summer I was in talks about graduate offers and campus brand manager work. They were very keen to keep me in the business and gave me all the support I needed to make these decisions.

They have a strong graduate scheme with clear progression routes. Personally the type of work involved in their management trainee scheme is not for me, but if there was an offer for something more office-based (similar to my summer internship) I would love to work for them. The company has a wonderful culture and genuinely values every employee. Wonderful place to work.

There were only 2 interns in the Nottingham office last summer, and we didn't do anything. When the placement year students came in August for their training, Enterprise RAC did put on social activities for us to do in the evenings to get to know each other, which was very nice.

As I was commuting, I didn't spend enough time in Nottingham after work to comment on this.

The company are very big on diversity and inclusion (which I loved!) and there were opportunities to get involved with the support they showed for Pride.
