About You
I thoroughly enjoyed the internship, my team that I was assigned were very welcoming and friendly. I also found my division an extremely interesting one to be a part of and fully got involved in a deal during my time there which was very engaging as I learnt a lot.
I felt valued by my team because I was introduced to everybody and people made an effort to engage in conversation with me. However, as with most internships since you do not have much insight into the sector and are there for such a short amount of time you can feel a little lost.
We received a buddy and performance manager, both of which were very helpful in guiding and supporting you through the vacation scheme process. There is also a KPMG online platform where you can learn a lot of things such as excel, or it even walks you through admin processes such as filling in time sheets.
I was working in the transactional services team, this meant I was handling and analysing data a lot of data and financial records. This will be useful for the political science aspect of my degree, whereby I will need to analyse political data to back up my points in an essay.
The Company
The structure was okay, there was an insight day for all the interns in all the different positions and regional offices where we received our laptops and learnt a bit about the values of the firm. We were then introduced to our buddies the next day and sat with our team. There was then 4 weeks to get to know your team and find work to do, without many events for the interns other than the last day.
My team were absolutely lovely and welcoming, I felt like I could talk to them and ask questions about the different projects they were working on. You did feel a little in the deep end, since for me I was the only intern on my team/ floor so I was lucky with my team being friendly.
The firm invested a lot as there was an online platform, by which we could access a whole host of courses to do. I personally learnt a lot and developed my excel skills with the resources KPMG provided me access to. The personal development I gained during my intern was mostly through asking questions to the team I was working for.
I can't really answer this question because I have not experienced a full time role with KPMG. I think speaking to the students on the graduate program, I had an accurate experience as I was working on a lot of the projects they were also working on and doing similar work.
They provided an insight day to which we were told the company values and were painted an image of the company culture. Since we were put on separate teams, we were fully exposed into the company and observed how people work there everyday as we were not just socialising with other interns.
It was helpful, I was a little anxious with whether I would be able to complete the ACA qualification because I do not do a finance or economics related degree. However, I was speaking to everyone who has completed it or are in the process of completing it and not all of them had that background so it put me at ease.
Everything Else
I was paid a decent amount, I think it is inline with the minimum wage. You were reimbursed if you had to travel anywhere other than the main associated office. I was in Milton Keynes for part of the internship and because I live in London I was reimbursed my fares.
There was one networking event at the beginning for the interns where we met all the interns in the different departments and regions. This was the only opportunity we had to meet the other interns. There were no official networking events, however you had the opportunity to network within your assigned team, naturally.
We had one social event on the first day with the other interns and they have organised another one for the last day of the internship. The social we had was lovely, however I would like to have had more opportunities to meet more of the interns since I didn't really see them during the internship.
Not really, maybe my team didn't really do any of the things KPMG offer because they didn't speak about the different things they get involved in. I think transactional services is very intense so they may not have the time to do as much as another division with more set hours.
I would recommend this insight to a friend, I had a wonderful time and learnt a lot of things about the industry. KPMG on the whole are a great company to work for since they have a welcoming and friendly environment where you feel like you can ask questions so you can learn.
