The Role
I have really enjoyed the variety available for interns on their desks, as well as the rotational aspect of the program structure. The projects I've been assigned have been challenging, but in hindsight very fun. Also, there is a lot of comradeship between interns amongst other interns. Everyday is different, and brings its unique set of challenges and fun.
On my desks, I've been given projects which will be used by my desk in the future. This responsibility has made me feel like a valued member of the team. Some desks will also take their interns out for drinks/food etc to help them feel comfortable and valued members of the team.
There is a buddy system in place to whom you can go to with problems. Your line manager and primary contact are also very useful and helpful contacts. They will always make time for you, if you ask them. However, any logistical problems can be directed to HR who are also very prompt and useful in their replies. All in all, many opportunities for support and guidance.
Varies each day and by each desk, but a 7am-5pm day was typical. However, this can also be based on personal preference. For instance, I enjoyed coming in early before my desk so I could read up on the markets, and also avoid the morning rush on the Tube. But again, it varies by each desk (coming in at 8am isn't unheard of)
Not too much that making a fault would be catastrophic, but not too little that you feel you can take it easy for the duration of each rotation. The internship gives u a nice flavour of the responsibilities a member of each desk has, and allows you to determine where your interests lie.
As someone form a non-finance academic background, the learning curve has been steep. But the skills I have learned e.g learning to code, learning theory etc have been invaluable for my future endeavours. Also learn the importance of developing a good network and trying to interact with people across the firm- a valuable skill in life as well.
The Company
It depends on what floor you're on. The trading floor can be sensory overload for some, meanwhile the research floor maybe considered too quiet for others. I was on and FX desk, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Everyone was really helpful. It would occasionally get loud as many people would simultaneously go on the phone to clients etc, but I enjoyed that regardless.
Very well. I know where I need to be every day, and if I don't, an email to HR will get responded to very quickly. The rotational aspect of the internship is the greatest asset of this programme- the opportunity to get a flavour of 2 different desks is very, very useful!
Very much. In the first week, we got training by an external company which got us all up to the same level in terms of financial knowledge. Also, throughout the internship we've also had talks and lessons scheduled by different members in the firm. We also get encouraged to shadow as many people as possible and try to learn by observing them.
Company Parties/Events
Citi is such a great company to work for. The employees are their greatest asset- fun, caring and invested in your development. Have really enjoyed my internship so far, and really am grateful for the efforts the company have made to make interns feel welcome. Future employment prospects are appealing.
The Culture
Yes there was. The social scene could have included division parties organised by separate divisions, Friday drinks, which were independently organised. You get to meet some really cool people as well, so socialising with your fellow interns is also very possible. Since you'll spend a lot of your time with your fellow interns, its important to make an effort to socialise.
It's London, so its not going to be as cheap as some other parts of the UK. Accommodation is a biggie, but that depends on how close you want to live to the office, if you want en-suite etc etc. Socialising can get expensive, especially if you eat out, but, again, that's all personal choice.
I don't tend to go out, but many interns would go out on a Friday if they had the chance. It depends on your personal choice, if you enjoy going out, it's London, you will find a good place to club. But, there are also other avenues to socialise at night.
I always make sure I have te to go to the gym as my physical health is of great importance to me. One of my friends really enjoys football, and so goes back to home (lives in London), to play 5-a side with friends. There are opportunities to do things outside of work- make the time and have the conviction
