The Role
I'm about half way through and am enjoying my internship. RBS is a Great Place to Work and the office is really good with shops, cafes, gym and everything on-site. The work I have been given is meaningful; I have never been given something pointless to do just for the sake of doing it.
My colleagues have done a good job of making me feel part of the team and not just an intern. I take part in meetings and do work to help my colleagues and I have run meetings as well, with everyone taking me seriously and the meeting went as if a regular employee was running it.
On my first few days my manager sat next to me and helped me get familiarised with the office and the company. I can go up to her any time and ask any questions. We have weekly sessions to catch up and have support/guidance. I can also ask any colleagues as everyone is very helpful.
So far I have not been that busy which is due to a factor out of anyone's control. However I do get pieces of work from colleagues which keeps me busy for a while. There are assessments and charity projects that we do as interns that also keep me busy.
I feel like I have been given almost the same level of responsibility as full-time staff. I am given work and left to get on with it. I have run a meeting and hope to run more in the rest of my time here. People take me seriously for the most part.
I have learned many things so far such as agile working techniques, a modern office environment with flexible dress codes and working hours, etc. I have learned about excel and other software and a lot about human resources. This will be really helpful in any future work that I do.
The Company
It's a friendly and casual atmosphere, people come in from all times before 8am to after 10am or work from home. there's a shelf with sweets and chocolates and everyone gets on well, goes to lunch together, etc. it's a good atmosphere and makes me feel at ease
It's mostly well organised, there was an intern induction event in the first two days that provided skills training. RBS is experienced at having interns so everything is mostly smooth. The only issue is with IT, I couldn't use any computers for over a week when I started. Everything else is good.
There were skills training sessions in the first 2 days of the internship and there have been sessions throughout, for example a session on coaching. I have weekly meetings with my manager to focus on personal development and Ithink the company does this very well, for all employees as well as interns.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Working from home
After the internship there is a very high chance of being offered a place on the graduate scheme, either in the same programme or a different one. I find this really appealing and hope to get offeed a place as I would love to return to work at rbs after university
The Culture
There is a good social atmosphere people meet up and/or go out most nights, in my individual department we have a small group and have events such as dinner parties, going to the pub etc. and this is really good as it could have been lonely moving to a different city!
Restaurants/bars/pubs are expensive, you can pay £10 for a burger and £5 for a pint of beer Rent is also expensive, about £500 a month at least for a room Howver it's still cheaper than some places like London and you don't have to spend lots of money if you don't want to
I rarely go to clubs so I can't comment on that but I've heard good things from other interns. I've been to a few bars that were expensive but had a good atmosphere, it's a large city so there are loads of places if you want to go out, it's not a problem.
Yes there are team activities, our most recent one was crazy golf which I sadly couldn't attend. There are volunteering days, recently I volunteered to do a day of gardening at a school which was nice to get out of the office and do something a bit different for the community.
