The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I have had a great time learning about RBS and banking in general, I feel the experience has been very valuable and it has consolidated my desire for a career in Banking. I would recommend an internship to everyone as an insight into working life post university
My colleagues were always very friendly and helpful. I was initially worried that I would be a burden to the team however I felt like I was a valued member of the team and helped top relieve some of their work load while actively learning about the team and their responsibilities.
My manager was very helpful. We have weekly 1-to-1s where I can comfortably express my feelings about the role and my duties, while also suggesting ideas to further my learning and development. These suggestions were always acted upon and I feel like I benefitted a lot from my manager and his wider network.
Fairly busy. I always had a range of tasks to flick between throughout the day and if I was ever stuck without work my manager would always readily offer new tasks and challenges to me. I was never bored. Along with this there were always external challenges and events to go to.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility. My tasks always felt like they were important and necessary rather than being a side task. I did not have much responsibility in terms of dealing with customers however due to the nature of the role I didn't really expect this.
The training and skills I have developed are invaluable to me, both academically and professionally. I have learned so much about day to day banking and professional etiquette, and gained skills such as networking and strong communication which will benefit me in any job. Academically, as an Economics student to have hands on experience in a financial sector and to understand how economic theory translates into real life consequences has been very interesting and will be valuable going into my final year.
The Company
The atmosphere was a healthy balance between hard work and fun. The team were very friendly and there was always time for conversation and getting to know one another. However the work centric approach was adopted and work was never sacrificed for this.
Very well organised. We had regular events with the early careers team to learn more about the bank and its culture. We also had regular social events with the other interns and grads to get to know one another. There was a timetable set in place at the start of the internship dictating particular events such as learning spotlights and assessments which was stuck to well. This really gave the internship a good structure.
The company hosted numerous spotlight events in which they asked leaders within the Bank to talk to the interns about future developments both personally and Bank wide. There was a real emphasis on our personal professional development both individually and as a whole.

Very appealing. The company seems a great place to work at, as I was told by numerous colleagues. the company invests strongly in early careers and young talent and I feel like if I were to pursue a career with the company I would be open to endless learning and development opportunities.
The Culture
We had regular organised social events with the other grads and interns, at least 3 during our 10 week placement. Beyond that there was a sense of community with the other interns and we met up regularly outside of work.
Prices were to be as expected, very similar to the prices at home. On some of the organised events we were treated to 50% off which made socialising very appealing and very cheap!
Great. There was a range of bars and pubs in very close proximity to the office therefore there was never a lack of places to go to. This expanded greatly when the wider Manchester area was considered which has lots of bars, pubs and clubs to choose from.
There were a few opportunities including social events and sports clubs. As I don't play sports I felt some of the opportunities were limited.
