The Role
It gave me the opportunity to get an exposure to the practical side of finance, as I was able to take on multiple projects involving different parts of the business. Also I was able to understand how working in asset management looks like, as I had only studied in that field and never worked.
I appreciate that some of them got me involved in a lot of projects and were always available to help me. I also appreciated the fact that all members of my team always invited me to their meetings, as well as suggested extra meetings/calls that could have been of interest for me.
Given the very busy schedule of my manager, I have to say that he has always been able to find some time for me, to talk about the projects I am working on and to ask me how I was settling with the team. Also, when he was not available, there has always been another manager that was following me.
It changed a lot from day to day, but on average I was quite busy, considering meetings and work. However, I must admit that I was expecting some extra work, as it happened that many times I didn't know what to do and I had to ask a lot of colleagues if they had something for me to do.
Talking about responsibility, what I can say is that so far, considering I am an intern at his first professional experience in a big organisations, I have been given quite a lot of responsibility and I appreciated that. However, the kind of tasks I was involved in were not always related to the program of the internship.
Even if I already concluded my studies, I am sure this experience will massively help me in my professional careers. Not only because of the skills I acquired and developed, but also because of the people I met, with the many advices they gave me. I am sure that the network I built will help me in the future.
The Company
Really good, everyone was really nice and calm. In general what I found very astonishing (in a positive sense) was that everyone was available to meet me for a coffee or just a catch up to help me understand how this business works and what are the different activities performed by different teams.
The program was really well organized. In particular, I appreciated the many catch up sessions organized with interns so that all of us were able to express doubts or ask questions to make the most out of our internship. Also, the many workshops organized by the recruitment team helped in building and consolidating relationships between interns.
To this point I must admit I was expecting something more. I am not saying I do not feel they invested in me, but I hoped that I had received more tasks related to investment management so that I could have learned something more. However, the overall rating is positive.
A lot. As I said I really liked the specific team I was working with and the people being part of it. But in general, I found all employee open and happy to include new joiners. I also found a high degree of competence which is what I was looking for.
The Culture
Perfect. Actually I became friend with some other interns so that now we go out together during the weekend and we always help each other when we face problems at work. So the atmosphere was nice, also facilitated by the fact that we were all excited about the experience we are having here.
Really high. This does not mean that socialising was impossible, actually I did it a lot, but just that everything is really expensive here. Fortunately the compensation offered by Barclays allowed us to socialise without any problems. I think this is important as one of the main goals of this program is to allow us to build a solid network for our future career.
In the exact area where I worked there are a lot of pubs or restaurants where I could go with colleagues or interns or friends after work. That is something really important since London is a huge city and it would be difficult to travel after work just to go to a club.
Yes, definitely. London offers so many opportunities to do sports or other kind of activities outside of work. Personally I went jogging in a park close to my place and also went swimming in the London Aquatic Centre. There are also a lot of places to visits like museums or theatres, so the opportunities are a lot.
