The Role
It was really exciting and challenging.
My colleagues were really friendly, they provided me with support whenever I needed it. They also valued my opinions and gave me a lot of advice on how I can progress with my career to be successful. We also spend time socialising and networking with more interns and senior staff of Barclays.
I was given clear objectives to meet. And we had weekly meetings where he would describe my objectives for that week to me and allow me to ask any questions I have regarding them. He also was aware about the level of my knowledge in certain areas and allowed extra time for me to do research and learn about those topics.
I started the internship with not being really busy, I had certain training modules to complete during my first week. But after starting to work on my objectives, I had quite a lot of tasks to complete. There were also a few insight events and meetings to attend as part of my internship programme that added to the workload.
The project that I was given was a solo project, where I was working alone on certain tasks to complete. I believe I was given full responsibility on my project but It wasn't necessarily responsibility in terms of the team work. I still enjoyed my project and I was given enough tasks to complete.
I am in my second year of my degree and the training I did at Barclays involved all the topics that I will learn in my Third year of University. I believe it helped me utilise my summer and get a head start in my final year project and some of the final year modules.
The Company
My work environment was quite balanced. there were conversations here and then. there were also times where there was quiet so we can focus on doing our work. Atmosphere in my office was also really supporting and everyone was really friendly and always happy to answer my questions. The people I worked with were really friendly.
From the start date, we were given really through training and insight to every department within Barclays. I was doing a Technology internship but I also got training in other aspects. There trainings were booked few weeks in advance. I was given my objectives the first week I started and I started working on my project from the second week.

The Culture
We had a lot of time to socialise and spend time together. there were sessions arranged for us to shadow each other so we get a feel of different departments within the company and how they operate. There was also some volunteering days which we spent time outdoors helping the community.
My internship was based in Northampton office. So the rents were not as bad. I stayed in private rent for the first half of my internship and in University accommodation for the second month. There were quite a few pubs in the town centre and a few shopping centres and cinemas.
Well, the town that I had my internship in, is Northampton. and Northampton is quite a small town. The town on weekends wasn't very crowded. There are a few pubs that turn into clubs after 10pm. But generally speaking, it's not much nightlife. There are also few clubs, and they do occasionally get packed.
There were a lot of activities to get involved. We had training sessions outside office for certain days of the week. there were also offers and discounted memberships for gyms. We also got the opportunity to do volunteer working and go outdoors in a country park to help the community.
