    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship offers a lot of flexibility and insights on various departments. There is also a lot of events going on throughout the two months here. However, the work itself took two weeks just for setting up the technology and access, and you don't get to choose the department to work in.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Many teams have hot desks where people of the team shuffle around. Many employees also work from home, multiple days throughout the week, and so it is difficult to really know who is on the team and establish a connection with them. The team culture is missing a bit. However, everyone is very friendly and helpful.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager and supervisors are extremely supportive and helpful. Always available for questions and they go out of their way to explain content and help with the projects. We also had weekly lunches together on Fridays and were able to connect on a more personal level (talking about things outside of work).

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The projects themselves were not too time consuming or demanding, and so it allowed for a lot of time to meet with individuals of other departments and attend internal events. So, my schedule was nicely balanced with work and meetings. However, the work itself could have been a bit more exciting.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was responsible for leading some of the projects and providing my own inputs. My line manager gave me a lot of independence with my work but was there to read through it and to help out where needed. I lead the project by reaching out to related individuals and wrote supporting confluence pages.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The internship mostly taught me about the financial industry and more specific details within it, which is difficult to learn outside of such environment. However, the skills learned here are not directly applicable to my degree, but will help me to some extent beyond it. What was particularly interesting was learning about the corporate world and the opportunities within.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Some of the colleagues was a lot of fun, but the office itself was not in an exhilarating environment. This really depends on the team that you are in as some floors of the building are much more welcoming than others. This also applies to the general mood of the environment too. In my area, it was quite formal, but some colleagues were fun to converse with.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was decently organized in the sense that it had multiple events planned throughout the time and we were set up with a buddy and mentor. However, there were a lot of IT issues which should have been resolved before arriving, and we also did not get to choose the department to work in, despite being sent an email.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There are a lot of opportunities to meet with directors of various business areas to learn from. But that comes down to own imitative. The organized workshops were quite interesting, but did not provide a lot in terms of personal development. There is access to online platforms via the firm for taking classes in areas to develop skills.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This really depends on the department. There are some very exciting departments, but the one that I was selected to is not one that is highly appealing. What appeals me the most about the work, is in fact the flexibility to switch departments and to get out of it what you put in.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was definitely a social scene amongst the fellow interns, where a group chat was created prior to the placement. We met up for lunch almost every day, organized after work activities, and supported one another with questions and answers in the chat. There's the flexibility to be involved with the social activities a lot if one desires to, or to just join a few.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was quite expensive, flat sharing is the only option in order to keep it relatively affordable. Socializing really depends on your own preferences. If you like doing it, it will cost a bit more, but there are also affordable ways of doing so. Cost of living and socializing is probably around £1300 per month.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • In the particular area of Canary Wharf, there are a lot of bars and restaurants. Thursdays is the day where most people in this industry go out after work. So there is a lot to do, but it's not all night. However, it is close to central London where a lot is happening all night.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, it is a very vibrant place with opportunities all over. The fellow interns planned some social activities outside of work, such as bowling and laser tag. There are also a lot of events and charities to get involved with in the area. Music and sports are also promoted both within work and outside.
