    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I very much enjoyed the vacation scheme. I enjoyed the work which was given to me and found there to be a good amount of variety. Everyone I spoke with and did work for was very helpful and willing to take the time to answer any questions. The firm also put on a number of social events!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • The firm went above and beyond to make placement students feel welcome. Each student was assigned a buddy and a supervisor to help with any questions. There were appraisals at the end of each week where you received feedback and advice on the work you completed. On top of this, every member of staff was extremely welcoming and willing to spare time to answer any questions.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • During each week of the placement, a supervisor and a buddy from the practice area were assigned to help with any questions and to provide feedback on any work completed. These individuals were always willing to help despite being busy with their work. On top of this, every member of staff I spoke with was happy to help with any questions or even just to have a chat about the work of different practice areas.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There were seminars from each of the practice areas which were very helpful in building up an understanding of the work those departments carry out as well as providing an opportunity to ask any questions. The work that was assigned during the placement and the feedback given was also very helpful in demonstrating and developing the skills needed to work at a commercial law firm.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • I was informed well in advance what practice areas I would be sitting with. Once the placement started, the organisation was excellent. The first day induction covered all that was needed and each team was at hand if there were any further questions or issues that required help.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • During the two week placement, the practice areas I sat with were great teams where everyone was helpful and happy to spare time to have a chat about what they were working on. Staff in other departments were always happy to answer any questions about the work they do. The firm also organised a number of social events over the course of the placement.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm assigned every student with a buddy and supervisor who helped with work and gave feedback which was very instructive. Receiving feedback at the halfway point was particularly helpful. Each practice area put on a seminar outlining the work they carry out which helped build understanding as well as providing the chance to raise any questions.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The placement gave you a good understanding of the work you may be exposed to during a full time career. This was helped by the fact that the firm ensured there was always enough work to keep you busy. Each member of staff was approachable and happy to answer questions which further helped build an understanding of what a full time role would be like.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Everyone at the firm was happy to answer any questions about the working culture. Over the course of the placement everyone was very helpful and welcoming which gives a good insight as to what working at the firm would be like.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The placement was invaluable in helping form a career decision. At this stage you are already fairly certain but experiencing both the work the firm carries out as well as building an understanding of what the working environment is like is something that you need to be there to fully experience.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • The pay for the 2 weeks was generous and travel expenses for previous interview stages were reimbursed.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were various social events where you got to meet employees. Each practice area conducted a seminar outlining the work they are involved in. This was a great opportunity to speak to people in practice areas you have a particular interest in/want to learn more about. Everyone at the firm was happy to spare the time to have a chat about their work.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The firm held various social events, including a night involving darts, dinner as well as inviting the placement students to their summer party.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • The firm is involved in pro bono work. There was a presentation on this and I was able to go along to one of the advice centres and help with this. People were happy to talk about such things as sporting activities and placement students were even asked to attend some of these.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
