The Role
It's has been a great year! Made good friends in the company and worked with helpful and lovely people that didn't make me feel like I was a student. I enjoyed the projects I worked on, some which involved programming a UR robot to automate processes in production to increase efficiency.
I felt valued when I saw the positive effect my work made in the company. And this all came down to being given enough responsibilities during the placement. People also involved me with activates going on in the department which was nice, this made me feel more as part of the team rather than a student
Everyone was always happy to assist you when you had questions, this made the job less nerve racking.
It varied for a while, there were some periods when I was really busy doing my projects, but in between projects I didn't have as much to do.
I was given responsibilities that affected daily production and meeting customers order on time. I did a lot of purchasing involving meeting with and speaking to various suppliers to ensure they met our requirements. I was given projects to find ways to improve productivity of a process. These in my opinion were sufficient responsibilities to make feel part of the team
I didn't get as much training in the role as I would have hoped, however, I got training in Lean manufacturing which I found interesting and was useful for a project I worked on . Also developed project management skills and effective communication when speaking to customers, suppliers and given presentations. Speaking to customers suppliers definitely increased my confidence level when giving information across, regardless of who is on the other end. This is something I would find very useful in my degree
The Company
It was a very nice and calm paced environment to work in. I didn't feel have to work with tight time constraints, so I didn't feel like I was under too much pressure whilst working which I like. Also, everyone mostly got along mostly because they have been working together for years.
It wasn't very structured at the beginning of the placements. I was given set tasks to do on a daily basis, so it took me while to understand what my job role involved. I would have preferred if I had a set of goals to achieve each month. However, this got better towards the end of the placement and has been improved in for the new placement student.

The company is a good with bringing back placement students for a graduate role, with a decent salary. It is always looking for ways to bring fresh and bright ideas on board. However, I am looking for a graduate role in the food manufacturing industry as my degree is more in line at industry. I came to ASM to experience a different sector and industry and I have gained valuable skills and knowledge that I hope to use moving forward.
The Culture
Yes there was, all the students got along and the company encouraged us to sit together during lunch to get to know each other better. We had a group chat together and planned a lot of activities outside work. Also with the presence of the spirts and social club it was easy to get to know colleagues outside of work.
The living cost was more expensive as I would have thought, given that it is a small town down south. The rent is just as expensive as the big cities. However, the social side of things were less expensive, there are a lot of cheap pubs around to get decent food and the cinema tickets are cheap compared to other places. Also beach is free :)
Yes there are! The company had a sports and social club and they organize events throughout the year. Some events include; charity events, shopping days to a different town/city, summer and Christmas party, festivals in town to get involved in. In terms of sports the company organizes football and volleyball matches and tournaments.
