The Role
My work environment was fantastic, everybody was very welcoming and helpful in answering questions. I was encouraged to ask questions and genuinely felt like they cared for my learning and personal growth. The work was flexible to what suited me best and I felt like I was contributing back to the business.
My colleagues are very friendly people. They seemed to treat me as an equal even with the wealth of knowledge that they have more of. They are welcoming to interns on the team, including us in team lunches as well as in team meetings so that we will be more familiar with the work that the team does as well as the people in the team as well.
My manager was wonderful. I felt like he was very open-minded and flexible to the kind of work that I wanted to do as well as what I had to say in my progress. I always felt encouraged to explore different parts of the team, and not confined to what I was tasked with, so there was some good freedom.
Initially, not so much as we were still in the learning phase, and the work given was easily finished. I did not know enough to know what projects I wanted to get involved with initially but once I did, my manager was very flexible in changing my objectives and adding more to my workload when I asked for more.
I would say I didn't wholly own a project by myself as I was in the Analyst role, rather than the Developer role. It also takes time to explain the processes to us before giving us independence. But over time, I handled meetings by myself and was given more responsibility.
I wouldn't say this is too related to my degree as my degree is more focused n Statistics and Mathematics, but it definitely developed my Business sense, so I would say it applied to my Finance modules. A lot of what I learnt was to do with how the company works as well as coding(which my course has little of).
The Company
There were many people in my team and many existing teams in the surrounding area. It felt like a very collaborative environment and very lively at times. It was enjoyable seeing how different members of the team work together and their day-to-day work. People knew when to separate work and non-work related talk.
There were many talks in place for us to attend, which I enjoy as it gives us a chance to listen to high positioned people in the company talk about their departments, as well as meet the other Tech interns in one place. I would say though, that I expected it to be more structured than it was, as my work was very flexible.
My team leaders were very willing to spend their time to introduce what the team does and the overall picture of the team, I am very grateful for that. In terms of the firm itself, I don't think there were really any formal training places I could access within the firm.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Very appealing. The employees seem to be treated well. Especially as a woman, I have seen how many mothers can work as well as start a family, which is very appealing for people who want a career and families. Some people work some days from home to take care of their children, and I like that it is flexible like that.
The Culture
Yes, we met every Friday after work and occasionally some other days. We also meet each other for lunch. However, in terms of formal social scenes, I don't think there was any organised just for the sake of socialising and networking. We interns were quite close though, as there were around 37 of us.
Canary Wharf is not exactly known for being the cheapest place to hang out with people, but some bars like Wetherspoon were not too bad. Restaurants are on the more expensive side though. I'm not sure about the cost of rent as I did not live in the Canary Wharf area.
Bars were good and lively after work. The river scenery is very pretty as well.
These activities were quite hard to find for me. There weren't any that I was really into.
