The Role
Brilliant placement geared towards moving directly into a Junior Quantity Surveying Position with the opportunity to finish University part time. Really enjoyable environment to work in.
Everyone was willing to provide me with work so that I was rarely not busy. People were always willing to help and explain things to me.
I was supported a lot during regular 1 to 1's with my line manager to make sure that I was ok with my work load and learning what I needed to meet my objectives. I also received support from the National Grid Academy which provided quality training on all things from mental health first aid to presentation skills.
Overall I was kept fairly busy. There was a period at the beginning where it took time to get going, but as a new starter that's to be expected while you get to grips with things. The good thing was that it was down to me to manage my work load and seek opportunities to learn.
At the beginning I spent most of my time shadowing people to get an understanding but the more I learnt the more responsibility I received. towards the end of my placement I was given my own project to take the lead on and was supported by my line manager and colleges.
Most of my technical knowledge gained this year is based around contracts, and that's a large part of my third year modules so I'm hoping it will be helpful. I have developed in professional skills such as time keeping and organisation which will definitely help me with organising my studies and meeting deadlines.
The Company
The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and welcoming. As Quantity Surveyors people regularly go to site, which means that we all hot desk and there's always different people in the office .
Incredibly well run. National grid has its own academy dedicated to new recruits. We spent the first couple of weeks of the placement here on training with people on placements all over the company. We were set objectives by senior Quantity Surveyors and the review system ran smoothly.
The amount of training I have been on is astounding. The first two weeks were spent at National grid's academy where I received a wide variety of training on topics including mental health first aid, managing time and expectations, and technical training such as presentation and Excel skills.

At the end of the placement I received an offer for full time employment and have recently moved into a staff role. I can see myself staying with National grid for the foreseeable future,
The Culture
The social scene is really good. As its a large company there are many students on placement and we all started together at the Academy. Throughout the year we would frequently get together for social events.
The cost of living in Derby isn't too high. I rented a place with another guy on placement at National grid, so we were able to split the cost of bills. We lived in the city center and socailased regularly.
The night life in Derby city center was really great. There's loads of bars and clubs.
We were very active in organizing activities within our cohort. As everyone is living in a new city away from home we all made the effort to socialize.
