The Role
The thing I have enjoyed most about my placement is the people I have met in my time here. The work itself hasn't been all that exciting and has at times been very stressful but I've been lucky enough to work with some really great people that has made every day worthwhile.
In the latter months of my placement there have been many issues that have come to light and the whole plant is in a struggle. I feel that I have really stepped forward in this time and have been able to support all my colleagues as best I can and I therefore feel that I have been valued quite highly during this period.
I have had a lot of support from my supervisor who has shown me new systems and processes so that I can help to support him and the rest of the team. I have also found that my colleagues in the office have been very helpful and we all aim to work together and support one another with a lot of our tasks.
In the first few months I was relatively quiet and had plenty of spare time to support other departments but in the last 4 or 5 months I have been incredibly busy and have been working over my allotted hours. I have also taken on other responsibilities which my colleagues have had to hand over to me because they simply do not have the time to complete them due to the large workloads they now find that they have.
I have been given a great deal of responsibility, from leading meetings to communicating emergencies with the customer and also resolving issues in the system. These responsibilities have been passed on to me throughout the year after I had proven that I was capable and able to complete tasks to the right standards.
The skills I have developed will make a huge difference to the rest of my studies. I think the main factor for helping me next year will be that I have now developed a good day to day routine. I have also developed a much better work ethic and enjoy being busy and I no longer panic when I have a large workload and a lot of deadlines. I now get myself organized and plan an efficient way to complete all my tasks on time.
The Company
LOUD The people in my office have been a lot of fun and we enjoy having a laugh and taking the mick out of each other. But when there are big issues I have found that the guys in the office are not afraid to express their feelings if they do not agree with a decision and at times it has become quite tense
I think the first few weeks were not set up particularly well as I only had 7 days with the previous student to hand over his knowledge to me and I felt that there wasn't really much for me to do in the first few weeks I was left on my own. I think there need to be some more student events throughout the year in order to increase student contact and this would make it easier to check in on the progress of all the students.
I don't think the company spent any time to personally develop and invest in me. I was left to learn and pick up most things by myself. I was supported by my supervisor when learning some new processes or using new systems but this wasn't really personal development. I have spent the majority of my time working independently so after this year it feels more like I have achieved a great deal of personal development.
Sports and Social Club
I am considering the VIE scheme as I have always wanted to travel and this could be a great opportunity for me to experience another country with a company that I am already familiar and comfortable with. I am not interested in the graduate scheme because if I stay in the UK I would like to qualify as an accountant with an accounting practice.
The Culture
We have a weekly football social for 5 a side in the winter and 11 a side in the summer but other than this there has only been the Christmas party. There were not many social events at all so the only time to interact with colleagues was during working hours. It was also a shame that the students at Banbury all lived a long way apart from one another so we did not get much opprotnuity to do student socials.
Cheap for me because I live close by with my parents but for the students who have moved here rent is very expensive and the cost of living is high so not really ideal for students earning a small salary.
I barely experienced the nightlife but on the few occasions I did go out I thought the nightlife was okay. More of a scene for middle-aged working adults and not so much for students but still enjoyable every now and again.
Yes there were opportunities to get involved in local clubs and other activities. Luckily I live close by so I know the area well and what activities are on offer.
