The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship with Barclays. I have a really great balance between working to help support my team, working with various teams across Operations, as well being involved in a variety of talks that have given insight into the role. Moreover, there have been networking events and training to help support learning in the role.
I feel incredibly valued by my colleagues. All of my team and the other teams that I have worked with have been incredibly supportive and willing to help. With the buddy scheme at Barclays, it has allowed an opportunity to get help and support, along with having someone to look up to in the role. Also, the Directors are incredibly willing to give up their time to have meetings.
The support that my line manager and buddy have given have helped significantly to learn about Business Management in Wealth Operations. They have always given guidance when I have been stuck with any problem and have always been there to answer my various questions that I have had at points during the internship.
For the majority of the internship, I have felt sufficiently challenged and due to my time management have been able to manage the tasks that have been given to me. I have enjoyed the variety of work given from being asked to complete reports to conducting reviews of various presentations the team have had to create.
I feel I have been given high levels of responsibility during my role because one of my objectives was to conduct a 2019 refresh of the teams Taxonomy which has meant I have had to work alongside various Director. Also, I have helped to complete Weekly Reports, which are sent out to Managing Directors in Wealth Operations.
I have learnt many new techniques within Excel which will be able to be applied to my future career and final year studies. Moreover, the communication and presentation skills that have been developed from various meetings and presentations that I have been a part of will be incredibly useful in my future career.
The Company
The atmosphere around the office has been incredibly supportive and me feel welcome from the start. The neighbourhood structure within the office has meant that my team and similar teams have been based incredibly close to me allowing myself great opportunity to learn from people and work incredibly closely to advance my skillset.
The set up for this internship at Barclays has been incredibly well though through from the start where we were given an induction day to help feel welcomed into Barclays and get used to the company. There were then various tasks to complete to boost our skills, and then we have been able to balance day to day work with networking and talks.
The firm invested in our personal training and development from the start by the training that they have offered across numerous areas of the business. My team have also helped my personal development by letting me shadow some of their work and by setting me achievable but challenging objectives to complete across the internship.

The future job prospects within Barclays are really good within Operations because they are seeking to make Glasgow a Centre of Excellence for Ops and Tech so are investing in many Internships and Graduates to perform this. As a result of this new Centre of Excellence it would be great to be able to work within Barclays at it continue to grow.
The Culture
There has been a good social scene within my group of interns and colleagues from my team. There have been various opportunities to meet up for a drink with members of my team after work and also, I have been able to go to the Gym next door to the building with other interns.
The cost of living within Glasgow has been pretty reasonable. For example, there are numerous different restaurants and cafes where you can get quite a cheap lunch which are good quality. Moreover, the pubs and bars in general charge fair prices and have a nice atmosphere to watch sport or chill with friends.
I have enjoyed the style of nightlife within Glasgow. There is superb variety of activities for people to from cinemas to pubs and bars or fun activities such as crazy golf. In the areas close to where I was based there was a diverse range of bars which were welcoming and where everyone was warmly.
Within the city I have had many opportunities to get involved in different activities outside of work. I have been going to the most evenings after work and have been able to join a five a side football on a Wednesday evening. In my opinion, whatever your hobbies are there will be opportunities to get involved in something similar in Glasgow.
