    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • Was a useful insight into technology at BP. I particularly enjoyed the interactive session where we got to experiment with VR. We had opportunities to network with the graduates and employees, and understand the different sectors within BP and how they all interlink. It was very informative and I was pleasantly surprised by how much technology they use.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • We could interact during our sessions and the employees were more than happy to answer all of our questions if needed. They made sure they were very thorough with their answers but equally making all the information accessible so we could understand the different projects and what they were working on. They all seemed very kind and were very excited to have us there!

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • All of our questions were answered, and we were able to network and talk to the recent graduates and employees and ask them questions too. We also had a skills workshop where we looked at application tricks and also competency interview techniques, which they helped us with during the insight.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills we gained were mainly through the interactive workshops on CV and application writing and interview skills. These skills will help me when applying for internships and jobs, rather than my degree per se. However, the day was very informative and I gained a good understanding of the technology that BP uses - thus, encouraging me to apply for a summer internship there.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The day was laid out very well. We had a good mix of talks, workshops, networking sessions and a fun quiz at the end. Everything was kept very concise, and this ensured no one got bored and nothing dragged on. The sessions were all planned very well and I feel like I gained a lot of skills and knowledge.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • All the employees and grads were very bubbly and friendly, eager to answer any questions and happy to talk about their projects and work at BP. However, the students on the programme were quite shy and quiet - although that was probably down to nerves as everyone warmed up by lunchtime!

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • N/A

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • We were given a lot of information on the structure of BP and the different entry points for different ages/abilities. By the end of the day, we had gone through the different internship and insight programmes we could apply for and the application process for those opportunities too. Speaking to graduates and employees also helped us to understand what it would be like to work there.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • It helped a lot, particularly speaking to the graduates and employees. A common theme was that BP felt 'like a family', and everyone said they don't see themselves moving out any time soon. It was lovely to see all the employees so enthusiastic and passionate about their jobs, giving us a real taste for the company's culture.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • It was very useful, particularly hearing about how the CTO took such a convoluted path to landing in technology at BP. It helped me confirm that I want to go down the technology route and it fuelled my curiosity, particularly for AI and machine learning - something BP are investing heavily in.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Travel expenses reimbursed.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes, mainly over lunch. During lunch we were able to move around and talk to the other employees and recent graduates at the firm, and understand how they got into their jobs, what they're doing now and why they like BP so much. Then each of the grads/employees from the lunch did a short presentation about themselves and what they're working on.

    4/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • It was mainly just over lunch that we were able to network - so it wasn't that long but even so, the short time we got was very useful.

    4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • N/A

    1/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes. I would recommend it to anyone, as BP has a lot of divisions and isn't just the stereotypical 'Oil and Gas' company - it's investing in other sectors, such as climate change and technology and is likely to have something that interests everyone. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the future of science and technology.
