About You
The experience was a lot of fun. HR put a lot of time and effort into making you feel welcome. We attended events at Madisons and Flight Club. Additionally, we had talks from every practice group to get an insight into all areas of the firm.
You definitely feel valued during the scheme. Partners and senior associates will take time to talk to you for instance and ask you how the scheme is going. We were also invited to firm wide events, despite only being there a week or so.
You receive quite a lot of guidance and support. HR provide a handy booklet with lots of information. Furthermore, you are given a trainee buddy and supervisor for both seats that you are in for the scheme.
As a Vacation Scheme Student, you are limited as to the work you can do. I felt that I was given some interesting research tasks that enhanced my legal research skills. Moreover, the encouragement of networking, teamwork and presenting throughout the scheme will serve me well in the rest of my career.
The Company
The scheme is incredibly well structured. HR spend a lot of time putting on presentations and events for the Vacation Scheme students to attend. The work allocation throughout the scheme though is a little more ad hoc, with the exception of the group presentation.
The firm is a positive place to work and everyone I met was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Despite being very busy, people would still schedule time for a coffee catch up. It was a good couple of weeks. All of HR are also very lovely. They remember your name despite thousands of applicants too which is always a sign of a place that cares.
The firm invest a lot in your personal development. Not only do they hire you for two weeks, they put on a lot on training sessions during this time. For instance, we had presentations from almost every practice group. As well as updates from those involved in pro bono.
I think it was a good indication of the type of work and culture. The lack of experience of most Vacation Scheme students means you are limited as to the extent you experience the volume of work or the stress of deadlines.
I definitely learned a lot more about the Taylor Wessing culture. I also think you get to see the distinctions between different practice groups. This is simply a factor of meeting so many people from the firm. I also got the chance to participate in extra curricular events like touch rugby which helped with this.
I was pretty set on my future career path to begin with having already undertaken a career change. However, it helped clarify practice groups of the firm and groups I may have been less interested in, now seemed better candidates for seat application.
Everything Else
Pay was at a competitive/generous rate.
This scheme offered plenty of opportunities for networking. I must have met with over 100 Taylor Wessing employees via talks, events and work. There was also the opportunity for meaningful and honest conversations with many members of the firm during coffee catch ups.
Great, HR spent big and delivered. We were spoilt.
Taylor Wessing were quite good at this. They advertised their pro bono clinic from the off. We were also put in touch with the trainee committee who organised socials and sports events etc.
Of course. It’s a very fun scheme at a top firm. They invest in your development and put on great events. When you get the chance to learn and have fun doing it, you should grab it with both hands.
