The Role
I enjoyed my work placement a lot because of the experience it gave me in a professional environment. I was given real responsibility and I could easily see how I was adding value to Samsung. The office environment was nice and because there was lots of other placement students and graduates the social side of things was also good.
I felt valued by my colleagues as I knew the part I played in my team and wider business and so other employees would respect me and come to me for their different needs. Despite being a placement student I didn't feel any different to being a normal employee and I was treated well.
Initially, I was given very good support and guidance as I was quickly trained to learn everything I needed to know to do my job effectively. Samsung did however give me a lot of independence and so at times there was less guidance and I would have to solve problems by myself with little support.
The overall work load was just about right. I always had things to get on with and never found myself bored and looking for work. On the other hand, I rarely felt overwhelmed whilst at Samsung but instead had the right amount of work to keep me busy. There was a couple of busier periods where I would have to work slightly longer hours but it wasn't regularly.
I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement. This is partly due to changes in my team structure which allowed me to take on much more responsibility. This included a business trip to Germany where I was one of two people from the UK. The responsibility I had was definitely one of the most enjoyable aspects of my placement year.
I developed good time management and organisation skills whilst on placement that will help me in all aspects of my life - both in my studies and in a working environment. The technical skills I learnt such as using excel and different systems will help me learn quickly in a new job role.
The Company
The general atmosphere was good, as long as the work was being done there was a fairly relaxed atmosphere and it was rarely a high pressured environment. People were chatty and friendly and I never fell out with anyone whilst on placement. The dress code was relaxed and you could wear what you were comfortable in.
The placement was well organised as there was various different training sessions and workshops that were available for us to attend. These helped with our professional development. I understood what was required of me and I knew what my objectives were so I never felt like I wasn't sure what I was meant to be doing.
The company invested in me a lot, especially at the beginning of my placement. There was a whole on-boarding week where there was training sessions and workshops put on to familiarise us with working at Samsung which made the transition to the working world much easier. I didn't receive any formal qualifications/training, however this wasn't necessary for my job role.

I would definitely consider coming back to Samsung once I have finished my degree. It has been a great company to work for with some amazing benefits. In terms of actual job roles I am not sure what I would apply for as there isn't a direct link to my degree (economics) but I would consider the finance department.
The Culture
Yes, there was a great social scene. There was 17 placement students and 27 graduates and we all got on very well. I would go to lunch with them most days and we would also socialise outside of work which was good. This was one of the best aspects of my placement year at Samsung.
I lived very close to work in a shared house with other working professionals which I didn't know previously. My rent was cheap in comparison to the other placement students and graduates but this was due to the location and also the size of bedroom/house etc. Socialising was fairly expensive when I went into London but it just depends on what you do when socialising.
In the area I worked there wasn't really much of a nightlife, only a few pubs. However, there was other areas nearby with good night life which is where I would go on the weekends. This was fine for me as I didn't mind travelling to other places to socialise in the evenings.
There were some opportunities to get involved outside of work. On a Monday and Tuesday I played football with my colleagues at a nearby school which I really enjoyed. I also attended a quiz night which Samsung hosted after work one day. There has also been charity events which you can involve yourself in if you wish.
