    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed the feel of the construction site. I received good responsibility and never felt like a spare item. Enjoyed the team, really fun to work with and were always very helpful. Weekly football sessions also so good social activity too. Excellent location so was easy to get to from home.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Massively valued and was always given responsibility on a daily basis. Never felt like I was not wanted. Loved the general office banter and always made the day go quicker. Good support and advice received from all colleagues and were never shy away from answering my questions. Additionally, my manager introduced me to everyone so was able to know everyone on a name basis, which helps.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My colleagues provided good advice on various topics and were always willing to help. Colleagues always helped when trying to read drawings and find drawings on the online portal. Additionally, colleagues gave good trust in me hence was able to perform better. Excellent leadership shown by management too as there no unanswered questions

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Always were given work every morning and there was never a day where I never had work. At times were less busy, but was just the nature of the project/stage of project so completely understandable. Good working hours meant I could go home and rest well for the next working day.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Basically was given a couple of packages/ works to coordinate so felt like I was a real engineer. Was given enough responsibility to learn as well as give back to the team. Was given responsibility few weeks in before which was nice so that I could prepare in advance .

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed a lot of skills and learnt about the know how of the site. Developed my AutoCad skills as well as my ability on the total station. Witnessed many works scheduling which allowed me to understand how various construction techniques come together to allow the job to be completed efficiently.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very fun, everyone got along with each other and were very easy to talk to. Many other undergraduates on the job meaning I was able to socialize with people my age and get to know what they are doing on a daily basis. Additionally, worked with various professions in the office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The Human Resources team were very encouraging and helped me feel at home straightway. Once I joined I was introduced to everyone and got to know the whereabouts instantly. Human Resources team always were of great help and the induction provided a good start to the internship. Additionally good support towards the end.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I received good help to learn about the site from the beginning and my boss gave me a site tour meaning I learnt about it instantly. Got stuck in from the first day hence did not waste any time. Learnt about various construction techniques too.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very good, perform well and a job is highly likely. The excelerate programme is regarded as the best ever, so it is highly recommended to join something that I will be. Good investment in training, good responsibility and ability to progress within the company. would definitely join if given the chance.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • A whatsapp group was set up with fellow placement students, so could communicate with other people to find out how they were getting on. A night out was set up and had a good location meaning it was easy to go out as many of the sites were close together

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived fairly close to the site so living out was not a requirement for me. Also the cost of travel was reimbursed. The canteen on site was also subsidized so made it cheaper and more affordable. Everything was close to the site so meant after work was always enjoyable.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • there was no nightlife that I got involved in manly because not into that type of stuff however, colleagues did go on monthly night outs. these were also covered by subcontractors. These are sent to everyone on site meaning you are never left out of any team event on site.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • there was weekly football sessions so helped to stay fit. there was also a big 3 peaks challenge, had I been there for a longer time I would have gotten involved. Shopping area very close by to the site meaning after work, you could do shopping if wanted. Also bars were close by.
