The Role
The summer vacation scheme at KPMG was overall very enjoyable. I got a great insight to auditing, spent time on client sites and in the office, and made some great connections and friends. The office put on social events for the interns and in the four weeks, I got a really good insight into what working at KPMG would be like.
Everyone was really friendly and welcoming during the internship and especially when I was on the client site, I felt I really got to know the other members of the team and I got on with everyone well. As long as I tried my best, my colleagues valued my efforts.
My managers and supervisors were excellent at helping me whenever I needed assistance, and were really great at explaining what I was doing in detail. This meant that I got a really good understanding of why I was doing a task, and not simply just doing it without understanding the process.
I was kept quite busy during the day and if I had any free time I would always speak with staff or managers. Often, they would find something for me to do. I was never rushed or felt too busy, but there were some quiet periods, as is natural in the working world.
Because I had no prior experience in auditing, there was only so much responsibility I could realistically be given. That being said, I was left to get my tasks done myself and given the responsibility of asking questions as they arose, rather than someone constantly sitting beside me. I found this suited me.
Invaluable experience for future career. The internship provided a really useful insight into audit, with great experience gained from being on the client site and in the office. I also learned excellent interpersonal and communication skills as I had to liaise with staff and managers alike on different tasks I had to do.

The Culture
The area I worked in is known for having a good nightlife. It has many bars, pubs and clubs and there is something for everyone. This was utilised by KPMG as we went out for dinner and did a local activity in the area, with the other interns close to the office.
There was not an extensive amount of activities outside of work. We did one intern event where we went for dinner and did an activity. I would not have objected to more events, but I do understand it was a short placement and there were not lots and lots of interns.
