About You
I had an excellent time on Taylor Wessing's vacation scheme. It was well-planned, with social events and different Focus On sessions which gave an insight into departments that we didn't get to sit in during the vacation scheme. We were also lucky enough to attend the firm's summer party, which was amazing!
All of the work I was given were genuine trainee tasks - nothing felt like an add-on or just given to me to have something to do. When I completed a task for a trainee, and they sent it onto an associate or partner, they always mentioned in the email that I assisted them, which made me feel really valued.
During the vacation scheme you are allocated a trainee buddy and a supervisor (who is an associate). They are both great avenues for support and guidance, and I found that mine were more than willing to answer any questions that I had. In addition, the other colleagues with whom I shared an office were also happy to help, offer work, and make me feel welcome in the team.
I undertook a variety of tasks, which developed a range of skills. I was able to utilise my research skills, but also further developed my ability to take complex concepts and communicate them clearly and effectively. Following positive feedback in my end of week appraisals, I have become much more confident in how well I can apply my various skills to the context of being a trainee solicitor.
The Company
Our weeks were predominantly structured around the Focus On sessions, which we had at least one of every day. In addition, as we had a group presentation in the second week, we were also given structured preparation time which was really helpful. This was balanced with free time, flexibility and responsibility to manage our own time and deadlines.
The atmosphere was great. The firm is non-hierarchical, and doors are always open if you have a question to ask. The firm has a relaxed atmosphere and colleagues are friendly even during more stressful periods, such as the close of a deal. It was also lovely too see pride flags in the lobby of the office building and throughout the floors as we were there during LGBT+ pride month.
I found it really useful to have the end of week appraisals with our supervisor, particularly after week one as it gave areas to improve for week two. Further, we were asked to complete our own end of seat appraisals, which gave time for reflection on our performance. The first day was a really useful insight into what the firm expected from us, as well as tips and advice for vacation scheme success. The firm also held a keep warm event before the vacation scheme, which I was unable to attend but it gave more information on how to succeed on the scheme.
As mentioned, all the tasks I was assigned were real trainee tasks, so it gave a genuine insight into life at the firm. Furthermore, I was able to meet with trainees and associates who were members of different groups within the firm, such as Balance for Business, giving me an insight into the non-legal ways that trainees are involved with the firm.
Being a firm where talking to everyone is encouraged, I was able to get a real feel for the culture of the firm from paralegal to partner level. Furthermore, by being fully emersed in each department gave a real insight into what it would be like to sit within the teams. There were also scheduled networking events, again allowing the chance to learn more about other teams and people at the firm, and its culture.
My vacation scheme at Taylor Wessing gave me insights into areas of law, such as Employment, that I hadn't considered before but now would definitely complete a seat in. Similarly, I had not previously considered a client secondment, but by talking to trainees and associates at the firm, I would now like to complete one on my training contract at one of Taylor Wessing's market-leading clients. Generally, the vacation scheme made me realise how much I want to work for Taylor Wessing!
Everything Else
We were paid a weekly remuneration which was in line with the amount that other vacation schemes pay their attendees. The firm also paid for transport to networking and social events.
There were plenty! We had scheduled networking at the start and end of the scheme at the firm's rooftop terrace. The trainee council also arranged for us to go to Flight Club in the first week, and for a 3 course meal in the second week. We were also encouraged to meet other lawyers at the firm for coffees and networking of our own accord. We also had a lunch with partners and associates at the firm during the second week, which was great.
They were very enjoyable! They were all well-planned and at great locations.
Yes, I found that this was primarily done through the networking that I undertook of my own accord, meeting one on one with associates and partners. I was pleased to hear about the variety of groups and sporting activities that take place at Taylor Wessing.
Absolutely! It was a great way to find out that Taylor Wessing is the firm for me. You are made to feel valued and it is clear that graduate recruitment have spent a lot of time and effort in preparing the programme.
