The Role
It is slower paced than I expected. The desk I was placed on were great and always willing to help. It was well positioned to get exposure from various other teams. It was useful to develop my skills and see whether or not this is the right career for me.
Was valued by the majority of people I met. They took the time and effort to speak to me whenever I had a question. The work I did gave value to Citi and was implemented into the desk. In some areas of the business, people seemed to busy to give you any time.
The senior management on my desk were easy to speak to almost all the time. We organised weekly feedback sessions and further time to go over different business areas. They were also useful in suggesting further people I should meet and speak to. They definitely made and effort to support and guide me.
I was given a project for the entire duration of the internship. This took up most of my day. Aside from that I had to work on the trading game which took up the remainder of my time. It was fairly busy but there were moments where I got bored.
Beside my project I was not given much other work. The project I was given seemed quite simple and something the desk has not had time to do themselves. Since the team was quite small most of the work was very technical and required a very detailed level of understanding, I did not have many other meaningful responsibilities.
I became very proficient with excel and programming tasks in Vba. I had to teach myself from scratch. There was also an opportunity to work with python. It also helped me to develop my own initiative, since I had to seek out different people and go to events by myself.
The Company
I was sat on the trading floor so it was quite lively. I was sat away from my team, the people I sat near were quite dull.
I was placed in the Securities Services team. In the training week there was virtually no information regarding this and how it differed from Markets. There were several networking events and drinks organised that we were not informed about so we only heard about things from other interns. The team I worked with seemed quite organised however.
Besides senior figures taking the time to explain things to me, not so much. There was a lot of online content.
If you enjoy the industry then definitely.
The Culture
The other interns were great, we would go out at least once a week and hang out after work in the bars around Canary Wharf. Fridays were fun too, my team would order lunch and we would eat together. Outside of office hours I didn't interact with my team much.
I commuted from home so my only expenses were travel costs. The train journey was quite expensive even with a monthly ticket. The food was quite expensive however. The canteen food costs around £7 for a filling meal. There are plenty of restaurants and takeaways for a similar price range.
Great, bars stay open quite late.
Besides networking events not many.
