The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with Centrica. It was full of activities, I made new friends and the company provided us with very close accommodation. I made good enough money and got a first time experience of modern corporate working life. I also got to network quite a bit and experience different parts of the business.
My team consisted of about 16 people. They were very kind and welcoming to me. Their work was technical and quite specialised so I couldn't help them too much with their specific duties but they appeared to appreciate my business in the office. I would have preferred if they delegated a few more specific tasks to me.
It was good but perhaps could have been more comprehensive. I didn't help them too much with their specific duties but they appeared to appreciate my business in the office. I would have preferred if they delegated a few more specific overall project to me. Regular project direction would have also been nice.
I was often left to my devices and I could have been a bit busier. This varied across the internship as some interns were much busier than I was. I do like that I didn't have a huge amount of pressure on me but got to learn at my pace. I had activities and projects outside my team work to work on.
I was working in a pretty technical team so I mostly did updates and learning from the team members. I also participated in giving team feedback and reviewing their work. My point of view as a fresh set of eyes was appreciated. I was expected to input my opinion when I had one
I aimed to gain real life problem-solving and team work skills from this experience. I also hoped to learn how to use some new software and tools and I got to do that. It taught me quickly how work in a larger business works; and how flow of authority and regulation applies day to day in working life.
The Company
My office had a very international, modern, relaxed, supportive and welcoming atmosphere. Although changes were happening at the time I entered, the overall vibe was still quite chatty and positive. As a digital office, the style was quite laid-back. The atmosphere was one of the aspects I enjoyed most about the placement.
The overarching structure of the summer placement program was very well done. It was clear they have done this multiple times and nothing major went wrong during the 10 weeks. The accommodation, group, allocations and activities went as described and planned. My particular internship was a bit less structured because it was the first time the team was taking on an intern.
They invested a lot of time, administration and resources in us. We got paid quite fairly for training and experience, while having free accommodation and many team training challenges and presentations available to us. I felt well invested in and I believed all the other interns did the same during the time.

The company is currently undergoing change but they have reiterated their commitment to recruitment and new hires.
The Culture
Our accommodation area was a bit limited in the social opportunities. However, the team of interns were quite sociable, helpful and friendly during all our group activities or chats. We regularly shared meals and worked on challenges together. We even sometimes travelled quite a bit for nicer nights out. This was appreciated.
We were just outside main london so it was quite pricey.
It was very limited but there were opportunities not far away eg in Windsor.
Yes. There were activities and trips to the other sites offered to us regularly.
