The Role
I massively enjoyed my internship. It was definitely challenging, and there were a few moments where I felt a bit stressed and not sure that it was for me. But then there were great highs when I completed a piece of work or had a really interesting and insightful meeting with someone.
The team I was in, and the surrounding people, really made me feel valued. They clearly made an effort to interact with me both personally and professionally. It was a very relaxed environment with lots of socialising in calm moments, but I also had very useful professional interactions which made me feel like they appreciated the work I was doing and the effort I was making to learn.
For the first half of my internship I felt like I was not getting much support from my manager, however in my mid term review it was pointed out to me that it was my responsibility to reach out and ask for that support. After that point I felt much more comfortable giving updates on the work I was doing and asking for help when I needed it.
My internship work level started slow, largely due to my attitude rather than the work I was doing. My mid term review kick started me into being more productive and realising the tasks that I could put more effort into and spend more time on. However, my team and business area had a focus on healthy work life balance, so rarely worked until later than I was informed at the beginning.
At first I felt like I was not working on tasks that would particularly benefit the company, but as I got further into the internship I was both given more challenging and useful tasks, and I also realised as my knowledge deepened that some of the tasks I originally though were quite small and theoretical, I could actually do quite a lot with if I put the effort and time into them.
The main way the internship will assist my degree is through work ethic, time management, and other soft skills. My degree is not relevant to the internship or career I want to go into, but it did provide those soft skills in the first place to get onto the internship, and I have strengthened them whilst here.
The Company
very relaxed and social, with lots of chatting and friendly conversation.
generally very well organised, the main issues all seemed to be tech and access related, and until they got sorted it could mean significant delays in getting started on work. The development and support structure of the internship was really well done, with lots of networking and learning sessions organised to really make the most of our time here.
I learnt a great deal not just about my role but other roles in my business area through lots of learning sessions, and I developed quite a few technical skills which will be useful in my future.
