The Role
The internship was a fantastic experience in a really friendly environment. Everyone really cares about your own development and is willing to help out at any given time. This is refreshing in a banking environment and great place to find your feet if it's your first real work experience in finance.
My colleagues were amazing. Really sociable team who often went out for lunches together and also entered team sports days e.g. softball followed by drinks. They valued and supported any work I did and were forgiving and understanding of any small mistakes and your lack of knowledge as a new joiner.
My manager was fantastic at explaining stuff and taking time out to help me. When he was away he would check I was okay, but there was a nice level of independence and trust too so it doesn't feel like you are treated unequally. There's also great support from your graduate buddy!
Initially, not very. Towards the end I felt very busy balancing intern project and CSR challenge alongside work set by my team and new meetings with people. How busy you are is really down to you and dependent on your team you are placed in. Summer tends to be quieter for deals anyway.
A decent amount. Trusted to send weekly reports to high level internal people and work on high value deals. These were monitored initially, but eventually ended up being trusted to write yourself. Additionally, it was really flexible and you could arrange to meet and shadow lots of different people if you are proactive.
General knowledge of how banks work and finance has been invaluable, especially if I choose to continue in this industry. The team was rather specific and the market niche, but I learnt skills that will be transferrable throughout the whole bank. Any financial modules would certainly be eased by learning at an internship at RBS.
The Company
There were work sports days including sports ball and netball. Also talks, one including David Attenborough and Mark Carney! Definitely take part in the innovation and development council Hackathon competition for grads and interns if you can. These are a really fun 2 days which help you network across the bank whilst doing interesting work

The Culture
In London, a lot of people tend to have their own schedules and friends. However, after Edinburgh training I would often re-meet for lunch with other interns and it was very sociable. There are socials organised for you and an intern/grad pub quiz that were really fun and good way to socialise with more people in the bank.
Good except getting tube and meals expensive. Lots of money-saving apps in London however for meals and the gym, would definitely recommend researching all your options. Depends how stingy you are. Could easily spend £5 + a day on lunch which would really add up! Also lots of shops too.
