The Role
I am throughly enjoying my placement, I have learnt many new skills and it has provided me with the opportunity to gain experience in an engineering company.
All the staff at costain have been very welcoming with helping me adjust to this placement, many staff have taken the time to ensure I am understanding the tasks I have been assigned and will eagerly answer any queries I have. Not only the costain staff in my department but staff across all sections.
My line manager has been extremely supportive, this is by arranging regular meetings to ensure I understand my tasks and will answer any queries I have. Additionally all the staff were very helpful with answering any queries I had or taking the time to fully explain the process / software etc.
Throughout my placement I have been given a range of tasks and once I had completed one I would be set another ASAP.
I am fortunate with being given some responsibility at my placement, the level of responsibility was very manageable.
This placement has really benefited me with the understanding that I am in a career which I thoroughly enjoy, I have vastly improved a number of skills ie communication, teamwork and time management. The skills I have developed here will majorly assist me as I continue with my degree studies.
The Company
The general atmosphere is very positive. All the staff at costain have been very welcoming with helping me adjust to this placement. The client and other third party suppliers were also very welcoming and supportive.
The overall work placement was very well organised, as soon as I started work I was given a meeting to tell me what sector I was working in and some tasks that I can start.
Costain provides compulsory online training for all new employees which educates you on the Company’s values and the expectations of what is required from employees ie Data Protection and Health and Safety.

Costain has provided me with amazing experience. The staff have all been extremely welcoming and have really help me with understanding how an engineering company functions. The company has shown me that I do want to have a career in engineering and has giving me additional motivation to eventually gain charter-ship. If future employment was be offered I would whole-heartedly accept.
The Culture
During my 3 months there was only one other placement student however the employees as a whole were very sociable.
The cost of living and socialising is very similar to London prices.
There is a wide variety including many pubs, restaurants and places to walk.
Costain provide many opportunities outside work, during my 12 weeks Costain hosted a sports day for all employees. Even though it was raining it was lots of fun with lots of events on eg a smoothie bar. Additionally it had a very good atmosphere with many employees attending the event. Also, they started a social rugby and there are many onsite walking groups.
