    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Working at Vauxhall Motors was one of the best life experiences ever. I absolutely loved every single day spent in the company and the number of great opportunities the company has to offer. The amount of responsibility given straight from day one, will really make you feel as valuable asset and the person that can make a change.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Working with great people in fantastic atmosphere who really appreciate you for everything that you do on day to day basis has really make me feel valued as both an employee and a person. The company leads a Drive An Extra Mile Award Program which is an appraisal you can get nominated for doing a piece of good work for someone - usually it may be a good brand car for a weekend or monetary reward!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line managers were always happy to help and support me with everything that I did. Throughout a period of 12 months I had 3 personal management reviews as well as mentor meetings where I could reflect on everything that I did as well as get feedback in which areas I should improve. This was very useful experience, especially due to the fact although people treat you like a formal employee, they are aware you are coming to Vauxhall to learn and make the most from your placement.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Throughout my 12 months placement + extension period I was involved in total of 3 main projects at the same time. This was enough to keep me busy on daily basis and sometimes very challenging, especially whilst talking with people on different levels and making sure all the issues are resolved and work is delivered to the best extent possible on time. Along with the projects, the company offers a CRM projects that you can do for local community + opportunity to try different roles in the department for couple of days what was very useful.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I can honestly say that responsibility and 'being responsible' was the most important factor I learned from this placement. I was very thankful to be involved in the main projects of my team straight from day one and learn via on-the-job experience rather than doing some side projects who would not make much difference to the company. I felt accountable for everything that I do and I knew I had to deliver on time - failure to do so could mean a delay in the projects and consequences for the team as a whole.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Working as IT Business Analyst at Vauxhall allowed me to get a full hand real experience of software engineering development as well as IT business operations and telecommunications. I can definitely say my skill set has improved and allowed me to develop from all knowledge I learned at my university to be used in practise and feel how it is to work in real IT, corporate industry.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • OVIT office was a real living and dynamic environment. I can honestly say that everyone from the department get on with each other very well what allows for strong bounded friendships. Everyone was always happy to help and take part in multiple variety of social activities such as Christmas dinner or Undergrad lunches.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall work placement as well as internship set up were very smoothly organised. My placement started with a two week handover period - this was tr a little freshers where I was able to socialise with other undergrads as well as learn the job from the predecessors I took over from. Due to the complexity of the job I wish this period could be a little longer for new placement students, however i was able to pick up on everything from my line managers and learn for the first months of my placement.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Although the placement itself was an extremely valuable experience that allowed me to gain many skills and abilities which I will be able to develop further in IT industry. I wish the company could implement some external training programs or business trips to another Vauxhall/PSA locations to enjoy the placement period to the fullest and make the placement even more interesting!

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Due to PSA acquisition, Vauxhall is currently in the migration period from General Motors to a Peugeot SA. The company merges with a second European largest, automotive company brand what means that a potential scope for future employment prospects definitely increases. Another reason is a fact company offers a graduate schemes which may be an opportunity for successfull undergrad placement students.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The atmosphere with fellow placement students as well as work colleagues was very good, Throughout a whole placement period there was plenty of social activities being organised from an initiative of students or whole office department for example: bowling, pub crawling, nightouts or group trips to different towns in the area.
