The Role
It was a very enjoyable experience, as well as giving me a broad insight into what a career in audit would be like. I enjoyed being given a high level of responsibility and trust by colleagues to complete tasks and meet with clients. Overall it was a positive experience at a strong firm to work for
I felt very valued by colleagues, who gave me plenty of guidance about career paths and help in completing my work. I was pleased to be trusted to meet with clients on my own as it demonstrated the faith they had in me and my abilities. I was part of a hard working, relaxed and fun team who I enjoyed working with.
I had plenty of guidance and support. In particular, I was assigned a buddy on the same project so I had someone I could ask for help whenever needed. I also had a performance leader and a performance manager who could give advice on how my placement was progressing and about career options.
I was quite busy but not overly busy. The size of project and stage of it meant that there was a lot of work that I wasn't qualified to do, but I asked around and was normally able to find sufficient tasks to keep me busy, as well as assessing the progress of my placement when I had breaks.
I was given a lot of responsibility on this placement. For example I was relied upon to meet with high level members of staff at the client office to report back important information obtained. I was also given the chance to create my own work papers and complete audit tasks on my own
It would help massively if I chose a career in audit, as I know the back ground of how audit works and the internal systems of a top global firm. It won't have a huge bearing on my mathematics and statistics degree, asides from the motivation that a graduate job offer might give me.
The Company
It was an exciting place to work and a friendly atmosphere. Despite the importance and sometimes urgency of the work being completed, there was always a convivial atmosphere that a comparative novice could feel at home in. It appeared to be a social place to be, as there was enough conversation on non work topics to avoid getting bogged down
It was well set up from the start. We had a large Facebook group for all offer holders so we could get to know people in similar situations, as well as ask for advice from the people in charge. There was also a strong support network within the placement of senior staff to oversee my progress
KPMG invested a huge amount in me, from the assessment centre right up to the placement itself, which made it clear how much it valued me and my potential. I also received a lot of online training that helped me understand more about how KPMG works as well as some accountancy principles.

A very high proportion of interns receive graduate offers because they understand how the firm works by that stage. Salaries are fairly high and they rise significantly after qualifying 3 years into the job. There is also the option to change office and second overseas, while also experiencing other lines of work within KPMG.
The Culture
I didn't work with any other placement students, and because we were based at a client site some distance from the office, social opportunities weren't suitably available. The travel involved meant that staying for drinks with colleagues wasn't and easy option, as people were going to different places and were often working late.
The cost of living is quite high, however this is mitigated by all expenses being covered by KPMG. This includes travel and food. There is also a good level salary paid. Personally, I lived at home with my parents so I had no significant expenses, however if hotels were required then they would be covered by KPMG.
Not applicable
KPMG offers the chance to take part in corporate social responsibility projects by taking time out of work to work in local communities and help people complete building projects for example. There are also many sports teams and societies to cover many interests and provide a social group to interact with.
