About You
I enjoyed it a lot, it has given me a understanding of how an audit is actually conducted compared to the theoretical reasons why they are done that I learnt in university. Getting onto client site was very enjoyable as well as working on multiple different clients as it gave me experience in many different sectors.
It changed depending on what job I was working on, Some tasks did feel like they were just time fillers as they had no work for me to do. Others felt like I was contributing to the job in a productive way.
My incharges were all great. All super helpful and encouraged me to ask questions to further my understanding aswell as ensure I do the work correctly. The main criticism I would have is that the buddy I was assigned (was brilliant the times he was in the office) was on holiday/ICAS for 3/4 weeks I was here. He was offline on skype for 20 days so I couldn't ask him any questions.
I believe this has been extremely beneficial to me, It has given me access into how to interact and act within the office, It has also got me into the habit of a good sleep schedule and being productive with my morning. It has also instilled a sense of finding the answer even if not obvious which I hope to bring into my studies and life.
The Company
I had little issues with the structure, I always was assigned to a job (other interns were not) and had contacts I could message if was desperate for something to do. The initial induction event in Manchester was not well structured at all though. We were told they had arranged accommodation for us 2 days before arriving, by this time we had all booked hotels as believed we would just expense claim it. This was the case but the lack of information was rather irritating.
In the main office room it was quite, professional but a little bit uneventful. When on site or with my specific teams it was much more upbeat and exciting, a good balance of talking and work was achieved that kept everyone more productive.
They gave me a lot of trainings to do to allow me to work on audit engagements, past that there was informal trainings and guidance given in how to complete tasks and improve the work I was producing.
Speaking to the E grades was the best form of insight I found, they gave honest but fir opinions of what life is like when joining the firm without sugar coating anything. I found this extremely helpful as it lets me proceed in my accountancy career not completely in the dark. The tasks I was undertaking seemed to be mainly similar to what I would be doing in my first year of the Grad role but progressing past them sooner rather than later.
I feel like it has shown me what KPMG is all about, inclusive but professional. I appreciated the freedoms such as the lunch allowance and dress for your day incentives, there was also pressure to complete work thus showing the balance.
It has given me the information and experience to understand if I want to peruse a career in accountancy.
Everything Else
Networking was mainly reserved to fellow interns as there were little to no actual employees at the social events, meeting the grads throughout the working days was very easy though so yes there were opportunities.
The social event in Glasgow was a very nice surprise. It was good to see the interns I had met on my induction day again and get to know the Aberdeen interns more. There were very little networking events I was aware of.
I have not heard about any activities outside of work.
Yes, without a doubt. it has given me so much insight and understanding of what life may be like. I think it is a brilliant experience that everyone should at least try to see if it is for the.
