The Role
I really enjoyed my placement year at Intel, I learnt so many new skills and also developed my existing skills. I was really involved in the company from the start and felt like a valued member of my team.
From the start of the placement I felt like a valued employee of Intel. All of the staff were really welcoming and the company went to extra measures to make everyone feel welcome.
In my role, I had a supervisor based in the same office and my manager was based in the US. I had regular contact and meetings with both and I was fully supported during the whole placement.
The nature of my role meant that there were periods where I was busy and some periods where I didn't have much on. Despite this, there were a number of additional responsibilities I could take up outside my core role to even out the workload.
I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement, I was trusted to do a number of tasks on my own. This included; managing budgets, approving marketing activities and managing my own project.
There have been a few instances where my learning at university has come up in team discussions or customer meetings. Even though there were only a few instances, the skills I have learnt will assist greatly in my future studies.
The Company
I was originally seated just with interns in similar roles to me but half way through the year we were moved to also be sat with our teams. This helped us a lot as it was more inclusive and easier to get help if needed.
Intel have been running the placement program for so many years and always look for improvements. It is a really well-run program.
After getting comfortable within my core role, I was able to look for additional responsibilities. If I asked my supervisor/manager for help developing certain areas they were able to point me in the right direction or give me new responsibilities.

Intel use the placement as the main hiring process and there are often opportunities to come back as a graduate. The roles as a graduate are often in operations and there seem to be good opportunities to develop a career.
The Culture
There was a great Intern community at Intel and we regularly did activities/nights out as a group.
Cost of living and nights out were both very cheap
The nightlife isn't great but you can have good fun anyway
There were many opportunities both from an Intern community and also in the wider site-wide community.
