The Role
I really enjoyed my internship at M&G Prudential. I was put in a small team of interns for a length of 8 weeks. We got on really very well which made a good working environment. Everyone was very kind. I would highly recommend this internship programme. I would go back and work for them again.
I felt very valued by my collegues and managers while working an 8 week internship at M&G Prudential. We were given a high level of autonomy which made us feel valued in the company. We were not micromanaged and were given meaningful tasks - as oppose to easy little ones.
As explained above, we were given a high level of autonomy while working here. We were given a project to complete and were not micro managed while doing it. Having said that, we were given mentors from all areas of the business who aided us whenever we wanted - because of this we were very supported.
I was very busy on a daily basis, but never enough to have to stay late. Truthfully, it was the perfect amount of work. I always had work to do while I was in, yet never felt like I had to stay any longer than I should have to complete it.
As explained, we were given a lot of autonomy. Having said that, nothing we were working on had any weight or stress. Because of this I would say that we didn't have lots of responsibility, but this isn't to say it was a bad thing, its just to say the work didn't have a lot of stress to it.
I spent my time doing coding. As a physics student this will help me only marginally. The problem solving skills I learned will help me, but the computer science I have learned during the internship will not be of aid during my final year of study at the university of St Andrews.
The Company
The atmosphere was very good in the office. On Fridays most of the employees, if not all of them, worked from home, this made the office very quiet. However, other than that the office was very busy and loud which made for a good atmosphere I thought. I enjoyed the noise.
Initially the internship was poorly organised as know one knew what we were doing. However, this was only for the first week, after this the internship was very smooth sailing. I think it was poorly done at the start just because this is the frist time the company has done it in Edinburgh.
The company invested a lot of time in me. They invested time in me learning Python. They did not personally teach me but rather gave me the time to self teach. To accompany this self teaching they had mentors at hand to aid me whenever I had any questions of Python.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Future employment prospects are very appealing with M & G Prudential. They have showed me that they are a company that offers flexable working and gives their employees autonomy to produce work that they think adds value to the company in some way shape or form. I would be inclined to accept a job offer from them.
The Culture
There were only 2 other interns in the office. They were both very kind and very funny. We got on very well and Im happy I got to work with them over my time here. No social events were organised by the office but we did have a few lunches.
The cost of living was relatively high since I was living in Edinburgh. This is especially so since the fringe was going on at the same time. During the fringe the city doubles in population which means the cost of living soars up during the month of august, this made it expensive.
Edinburgh has a good night life. There are a lot of good bars and restaurants on George street, rose street, royal mile, north bridge, fredricks street, leith walk etc. There are also clubs like Hive till 5 and Why not which offer a good night out for those interested in clubs.
Sadly there were no activities outside of work that I was aware of. I heard that there might be a football 5 a side team that plays weekly, however, I could not find the organiser of said team. I'm sure there are some stuff but only being here 8 weeks makes it hard to find.
