The Role
The Internship as a whole was very well structured and allowed me to see different aspects of the business, whilst being actively involved in real work that was sent directly to clients. I thoroughly enjoyed myself on the Willis Towers Watson internship and it created a very positive image of the company for me.
As soon as I joined the team I was treated with respect and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful, not just in my team but with anyone that I dealt with. They see you as an asset for the future, so are willing to invest time into you in order to ensure you get the most out of your time there.
I had regular meetings with my buddy and line manager in order to make sure that I was getting what I wanted to out of the Internship. They also gave me feedback on areas that I seemed to excel in and also tried to help with any areas that I was struggling in.
Due to the team I was in, the work was quite technical which meant I had to undergo a lot of training before I could really start getting work that directly helped the team. However, I did have two projects which spanned over a few weeks which allowed me to fill my time when I was less busy.
The work I was doing was equivalent to what someone on the graduate scheme would do, although everything you produce is obviously monitored my another member of the team to ensure that everything was up to scratch.
I had quite extensive training due to the technical nature of the team I was placed in. This covered a range of investment vehicles and LDI management strategies which will be extremely helpful for any future work in derivatives. I also improved my excel skills which will be helpful in any finance area.
The Company
I was based in the Reigate office but got to travel to the London office around once a week throughout my placement. The Reigate office had a much less serious atmosphere with a good balance of chatting and working although it could get very quiet on certain days. The London office was generally more formal but there were still opportunities to interact both inside and outside of work.
The Internship followed a core structure that all the Interns followed which was helpful in order to ensure we all knew exactly what we were being assessed against and what things we would all be exposed to. Further to that, my team had set out tasks that they thought were more relevant to their area.

The firm came across really well to me and the Internship is set up as a trial run for both you and the firm to evaluate if this is an area for you. You're encouraged to explore different areas of the business in order to ensure the team you've been placed in is best suited for you. As long as you come across as being interested and invested in the work you do then a graduate position should be available.
The Culture
Reigate isn't the cheapest place to live, but you can get the train from Redhill which is very well connected to both London and the Southeast. The firm did give you the option of staying with colleagues who lived in the local area and were willing to rent out spare rooms for a decent price.
Reigate is quite a quiet town during the week. Although, there are lots of nice pubs and a few bars if you're craving a night out in Reigate. As we are regularly in the London office, you have the potential to go out in London which has an abundance of bars and clubs.
As a summer Intern you arrive during the most social part of the year. There are many opportunities for company barbecues and drinks throughout your time here. There will also be team socials and the potential to play in the 5 a side football league if that interests you. However SP Dons seem to have the biggest following in the company, so aim high and they might scout you up.
