The Role
I was always given work to do , so there was never a period where I didn’t have anything to do . The work itself , to be honest , was extremely tedious. The majority of my work was reconciling values on a spreadsheet too values on documents . Saying this , there was also times where the work was exciting as it was nice to see how the work linked to the bigger picture and see your work have an effect on the audit .
This was one of the best things about the internship . I was given allot of responsibility and given work by my seniors similar to what they gave the Graduates . My team appreciated the effort I put in and would constantly tell me how much I’m helping. It was really nice how everyone treated you as a regular employee with respect and also expected the same performance as a regular worker .
My senior was amazing and was always on hand to answer my questions . She made the environment extremely comfortable and this allowed me to ask as many questions as I wanted too. On top of this I had a buddy and councillor I could voice any concerns too , and I did and they were addressed immediately.
It was a great balance . At no points did I feel over stressed but I was still kept busy throughout the day . If I ever needed more work I could ask for more and there would always be more work to do . On the flip side if I felt like there was too much I could ask for more time .
I felt like I was given a good amount of responsibility . As I have mentioned the team treated me like an actual employee . On top of this I saw that my work was contributing to the final audit and I could see that my team values the contribution .
The skills I have learnt are mostly excel skills . This will have 0 impact on my degree as I do not use excel . However there are soft skills such as time management and note taking that will help me in later life especially when I start working . Other skills I have developed are things such as networking which I did allot in the last week.
The Company
The general atmosphere was quite relaxed at most periods . There was a period of animosity between two of the seniors , however this was resolved and did not affect my work too much . In general the CP office is quite laid back and it doesn’t really feel like an office in the sense it’s not too tough .
I felt like at some points my team was unsure about what was expected of me . I felt like allot of your internship depends on your team. On the whole I felt like it was well set up as I always knew what I was doing and never was lost .
There wasn’t allot of development or personal training . Everything I learnt was on the job and through my own attitude I was able to improve myself . I think the firm did offer courses online such as excel learning courses which I did take part in when I had some down time .
Working from home
I really liked the environment and people and that would probably be one of the reasons I would come back . The work however is quite tedious and I’m not sure if I could do 3 years of it . Overall the experience was quite positive and the job has allot of benefits.
The Culture
Allot of my time was out of London on client site . We had a couple of team dinners but there was not allot of socialising outside of that . Once I got back to London I was able to socialise with my fellow interns allot more and this was better in my opinion .
In London the socialising was way to expensive , any drinks were extremely experience and also the food was expensive . The cost of living in this area is also ridiculous as it’s london and it would extremely hard to get any accommodation, you would probably end up spending more then your getting paid .
Canary Wharf has a massive range of bars and restaurants . However these are extremely expensive and not viable long term . Outside of Canary Wharf there is a range of nightlife available as it is London , however the prices are still extremely high . The quality of the nightlife is good though .
There was not allot of chances for me to do any activities outside of work as i was kept busy for most of the internship . I did see that other interns had opportunities such as climbing the 02 . We also did have two charity days where we could leave office and do fundraising .
