The Role
Very enjoyable experience where I genuinely learnt a huge amount. I came into it not knowing a lot about audit and left feeling like I understood what the job entailed. I made some great friends and my team were super kind and helpful. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
The feedback system made it easy to see what your team thought of your work. My colleagues were very friendly and approachable. When they gave me work they were clear about what I had to do and appreciated the effort I made. I could see what i was doing was helpful for my team to meet deadlines.
The support and guidance system was great. A keen and positive attitude is honestly all you need. It is completely fine if you dont know much about the job before hand as everyone takes a genuine interest in explaining tasks clearly and helping with any queries that you may have.
The amount of work varied a fair bit. For the first couple of weeks you probably wont have a massive amount to do in audit as you get your head around the workplace and are given smaller tasks. Eventually you are given more responsibility and the workload increases but was never unmanageable.
I never felt overwhelmed with responsibility but I did feel like my team trusted me, particularly in the latter weeks of internship to really own my work and to complete it myself before a deadline. It was rewarding to display what I had learnt and try to perform tasks to the same standard as the graduates.
General workplace skills were hugely valuable. It was my first experience working in a professional environment which I will take a lot form. Studying engineering, there are a lot of transferable skills I can take back to my degree, particularly excel! The analytical number based tasks will prep me for future work
The Company
There was a very positive atmosphere in the office. You could tell that the majority of people got on and there was a general positive atmosphere in the workplace. There was a great balance between friendly chat between teams and focus when required. I made friends as well as learnt lots.
Very well organised. The induction in London was a great start and opportunity to meet interns from across the UK. It set the tone for what the 6 weeks would be like. Events and tasks were clearly communicated over email and the final event in Glasgow was a great way to end it.
They invested a lot into me. I felt that the company valued what I was learning, sometimes more than the work I was doing for them which was amazing. Seniors in my team were keen to show me new things and advance my learning so I was well prepared to work for the firm.

Very appealing. The internship showed me the possibilities that taking up a graduate role with EY can bring. The opprutinity to study and become a chartered accountant with ICAS will open a lot of doors and is a great incentive to join the firm. Career advancement within EY also seems possible.
The Culture
The interns in our office in Edinburgh got on very well. We were a very sociable group and often met for drinks and food after work and I feel like I have made some friends for life over this 6 week placement who I will keep in touch with which is great.
Edinburgh is a fairly expensive city, probably the most so in Scotland so the cost of living reflects this. There are however easily accessible supermarkets and lunch spots near the office which offer cheap food and drinks. I lived at home so cannot comment on the cost of a accommodation.
Nightlife in Edinburgh is great especially over the summer with the fringe festival getting started. There are so many bars and clubs nearby which we visited on a few occasions after work! Definitely a good scene in Edinburgh for young people and lots of fun to be had with colleagues.
