The Role
I’ve had a great 6 weeks at EY. I was always kept busy and given interesting tasks. The team were very welcoming and were always happy to give their time to explain tasks to me. The feedback system also means that you can get feedback from multiple people which is really useful.
I was always given support and guidance by my managers throughout the internship. It was always encouraged to ask colleagues for a coffee to find out more about their role, and this allowed the team to get to know me better and give me work which they thought would be interesting.
I was busy for the full 6 weeks. While I always had a backlog of tasks to complete, I never felt overwhelmed and my counsellor would check that the work I had been set was realistic for me to complete. In addition to the tasks I was set, I was also given a long term project to work on if I was having a quieter day.
I was responsible for making sure I completed tasks to a high standard and returned them by the deadline set. It was also my responsibility to ask for more work and try and get as involved in as many different tasks as possible. The buddy and counsellor system is great for helping you with this.
The Company
The Edinburgh office had a very good atmosphere. People are very friendly, happy to chat to you about how you’re finding the internship, and also happy to meet to discuss what it is that they do. There are lots of social event within the team and also office-wide which is great.
My buddy created an internship checklist for what I would hope to have achieved by the end. This allowed me to tick off tasks as I completed them and see the progress I was making at the internship progressed. My buddy also set up tasks such an a remote presentation with an intern in another office location to get me used to working remotely etc to see what a more permanent role would involve.
I was given a welcome pack which included a lot of key information for my department which was helpful. I was given multiple 1-1 sessions with various people on the team to discuss tasks, projects etc. My counsellor met up with me multiple times to also check how I was finding the work, if there was anything I wanted to feedback etc.
Flexi Time
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing. The team I was in was relatively young which would be fun to be working in full time, making social events better etc. Also, all levels of management in my department were accessible and happy to have me shadowing them, attending client meetings, travelling to client sites etc.
The Culture
Yes - the group of interns we had were all sociable and everyone was keen to socialise eg Friday drinks. My team was also social with team lunches, events, and the office has summer/christmas parties so I think there is a good social scene at EY. There is also a social committee which you can get involved with.
Edinburgh can be quite an expensive city especially during the fringe festival. The cost of living and the cost of socialising is cheaper in Glasgow, but I think it’s worth it because there’s a lot of events going on in Edinburgh and the office/management are generous with including everyone in events eg tickets, drinks etc.
The nightlife in Edinburgh was great and team/office/intern drinks were always at a different place each time. The Edinburgh fringe festival is also great and makes town busy and good for seeing shows. Teams often have a fringe festival social and my team offered me a ticket to join them even though my internship will be finished when the social takes place.
