The Role
A really enjoyable six weeks! It has been really well organised and structured and all interns have been well looked after to ensure we enjoyed the experience and got the most out of it possible. Buddy and counsellor system worked well to provide support and answer and questions. Trip to London for induction was all expensed and showed they really care about the interns and their experience.
Felt very valued throughout. They treated us as a graduate for the would period of the internship and we became intergrated into the team (which was quite small) very quickly. Only thing was that is very quite hard for inexperienced interns to get work when it was a bit quietet but everyone was really willing to help if they could.
Really good support from managers throughout. Sometimes my project manager struggled to find work for us to do but did go out of their way to find interesting things for us to do. Counsellor system worked well and they helped me to find work that suited my skills. We had three meetings throughout which was good for keeping in touch with my progress.
It varied. Sometimes we were really busy with presentations to prepare for staff members as well as other client/side of desk work being given. Work generally (expect presentations) didn't have really strict deadlines so you weren't under too much pressure. During quietet periods you had to reach out for work but this helped me to meet more people and pick up some interesting work.
It was difficult to have lots of experience in my area because it was very skilled and to do the work you generally need lots of experience and training. As a result and due to project budget constraints it was difficult to give us lots of responsibility but that was understandable. Work did hold real value to the team though.
Learnt lots of really important skills throughout. Communication skills were really important to ensure you understood the task and could explain research findings etc. to team members. Teamwork skills were also vital. Analytical skills were also further developed as we had to read through and extract key information from long research documents. Presentation skills were also improved during our group and individual presentations.
The Company
Really positive. Lots of socials at the end of projects and throughout the year. Doughnut days of fridays were also good and first fridays at the local pub was great to network. Team was also very sociable and we often grabbed coffee and lunch giving the opportunity for interns to discuss questions and any work.
Really well organised and structured induction which gave you lots of information. CSR was also really good fun and added real value. In office it would have been good to have had some more work ready when ee came in as first few weeks were the most quiet but the training sessions offered were great.
Lots! We had internal training sessions to help develop our team knowledge to help with projects. We were also invited to lunch and learns to learn more about key regulations that were being introduced. Had access to online training as well to develop skills through that which was also useful when less busy.
Company Parties/Events
Really appealing. Ebjoyed the work I did and I would love to come back as a graduate and do it full time. Progress opportunities are good and as you spend more time in the firm you pick up more responsibility in terms of client projects as well which is really exciting!
The Culture
Yeah there was. We often went out for drinks on Fridays after work. We also organised a fundraising event together which was good. I was in advisory which was a little split off from the rest of the interns though, so at times it did feel slightly disconnected. All in all was good though and there was lots of us in the office.
I was in Edinburgh which is quite an expensive place to live in terms of rent and other costs. It was a little fustrating that we were paid significantly less than London office interns when our renting costs ended up not being much cheaper. Especially as we were there during fringe festival!
Good nightlife in Edinburgh. Lots of places to go to and at a range of different price levels. Places do shut quite early except during fringe were the whole city was buzzing and did stay open much later. Overall was really good but perhaps not quite Glasgow or London if that is what you like.
There were a few but the internship is so short that it was difficult to get really involved. There are lots of sports teams and social teams, faith teams etc. which seem really open and available but we just didn't really have enough time, in an already packed schedule, to integrate into them.
