The Role
The work can be slightly monotonous at times but I was kept busy and as I proved myself more I was trusted with more complex tasks and things were explained clearly to me. The team and office made all the interns feel welcome and its good having lots of other interns to make friends with
My team were so friendly and made an effort to include me in everything related to the team. I always felt included and was kept up to date with everything that was going on in the team rather than it being overlooked because it wasn't relevant for me. They were all so friendly and made time for me even when they were really busy
It's hard at some times because of the time being the HY audit that there wasn't always time for my manager to explain things to me but there was always someone around whether it's someone from my team or my counsellor or another member of staff or my buddy. There was always someone I could ask.
My team were generally very busy the whole time during my internship because we were working on the first time half year audit for a large client. Therefore I was kept busy nearly all of the time with different tasks to help relieve the workload for others which was good.
As the time went by and i proved i could complete tasks to the expected standard I was trusted with more and more important tasks as my internship went on which was good to see the clear progression as to how the workload would change if I were to join as a grad
I have really improved on many different things mostly related to my excel skills and use of spreadsheets which will be so helpful for going back to university. Managing my time and learning to communicate effectively with members of the team is invaluable experience which will no doubt help in whatever I do next
The Company
Everyone is generally friendly although the atmosphere can be quite intense when people are busy and working. I wouldn't often like to speak in the desk areas so would always go to the breakout area for calls/discussions rather than sit in the main office. This is to be expected though as people are concentrating on their work.
My only thing that could be improved is my buddy changed after the first week which was slightly confusing, my manager also told me that she didn't know I was coming until I arrived so wasn't prepared for my first day in the office. However all of the events and communication with the student internship team was very efficient and everything was clear
There wasn't much opportunity for training other than interactive training videos however I understand this is difficult to do in an internship as I am aware there is regular training and obviously professional qualifications for graduates. So I feel that this one is difficult to answer, it was done as well as it could have been i think
I think I would enjoy going back to work at EY there is a good graduate scheme and the ICAS qualification is an appealing concept to me especially at such a large company. For me ai think it would be a good opportunity if the situation arose I think i'd be very likely to want to go back
The Culture
All the interns were very social and we had lunch together most days. There was an office drinks total and friday drinks most weeks which seems to very good. The current grads all go for drinks every week together which is nice. There weren't any team socials when I was there but it was a very busy time
I stayed at home so this isn't relevant to me
Edinburgh is a very fun city to go out in especially in August because of the fringe festival. There are lots of restaurants, bars, clubs and cafes surrounding the office which would be very fun place to start your career i think. Edinburgh is a great place in my opinion
I wasn't really made aware of any sports or other activities but i think throughout the year there are different activities and fundraising opportunities, CSR days etc. I think this is hard to judge based on the short period of time. I did attend a panel discussions event after work one day which was a good experiences
