The Role
The particular client/team I was placed on was really bad but I do not blame the internship program for that.
Despite having to do a lot of work as the team was very understaffed, I did not feel very appreciated. I was given very little feedback on my work and very little explanation. By the end, it had become more friendly but during the first days members hardly spoke to each other.
Tasks were given with minimal support and guidance and very little explanation of the process. I was given no feedback or counseling throughout my internship. While other interns had meetings with partners and managers in their team, I did not. There was no concern in my team for my experience.
For the last two weeks, I was given too many tasks that were out of my depth and not explained nearly enough for me to have control over my performance. Although one might think this gave me so much experience, it was not as valuable as I did not have the opportunity to really understand what I was doing.
I was given too much responsibility for my level. Both executing tasks that have been confirmed by many others to have been too senior, and in interacting with the client completely alone without much guidance.
I think that being put in such a challenging position has definitely helped me grow as a person and widened my understanding of how the working world is. Skills in solving problems with little knowledge and understanding, using context clues and own research have definitely been developed. I have gotten the experience of a large business and their financial system and some skills in excel.
The Company
There were very little social events which was especially disappointing, hearing about all the other interns and their many events with their teams and departments. As I was on client site with a particularly hostile client, the mood within the team and with the client was not very good. Mostly complaining. I hardly ever got to meet new interns, my intern friends, or anyone from any other team or department.
The events organized by the internship team were all very nice and I appreciate that greatly. I think that in terms of communicating to the different teams about the intern's role and their intended experience was definitely subpar.
The internship itself must have been a large investment. Within my team I have felt more exploited than invested in.
National Travel
Potentially within a different service line I could be interested in future employment. There is absolutely no way I would risk having the same experience I have had on this internship again though, which would be unlikely as all other employees get some sort of training before they are given tasks. Almost all people I talked to working in my department did not like their job.
The Culture
The interns were all very nice and smart and cool. I have definitely made some good friends. It is a shame that I had so little opportunity to see them.
London is very expensive.
Nightlife in London is nice but we ended very late every day.
I had constant work and ended late every day, exhausted.
