The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my 6 week internship with EY. During my internship I gained lots of new experiences and learnt so much in such a short space of time. I also had the opportunity to meet lots of new people and build new working relationships. The internship has given me valuable skills.
During my internship I had the opportunity to meet and build relationships with a variety of different people around the office. Everyone that I met was very welcoming and extremely helpful. Whenever I had any questions I felt comfortable asking everyone and their help was always useful and valuable to me.
On the first day of my internship I was given a buddy and a counsellor who were both extremely useful when I had any questions or needed help with any work. I had regular meetings with my counsellor to keep track of my progress and all of the management went out of their way to make sure that I got what I wanted out of my internship.
For the first couple of weeks of my internship I struggled to find work to do, this was probably the most difficult part of the 6 weeks. Although the staff were all aware of the fact that I needed work there didn’t seem to be enough to go around. However, during the second half of my internship, my counsellor managed to book me onto jobs which had more work going and I was able to feel more valuable to the team and was kept busy.
I was surprised at how much responsibility I was given as an intern, especially as I had no experience and lacked the training that the other staff have. Although I was made to feel very responsible for my own work however it was reassuring to know that everything that I was doing was being checked and everyone seemed to understand that I had a lack of experience in the job.
I feel that the skills I developed during my internship will definitely help me during my final year at university. Although I study an accounting degree, it is very different when seeing it done in practice. Therefore, my internship has given me experience and knowledge that I can use throughout my degree to improve my work.
The Company
I found the atmosphere around the office to be more relaxed than I expected, especially in my department. I found that everyone was very friendly and approachable and I didn’t feel as intimidated as I expected to. There were also various social events around the office that I was able to take part in which helped make the working environment better.
I found that the organisation of the internship was extremely good. I was impressed of how much time they put into making our experience exciting and encouraging us to socialise with each other. The recruitment team set up many events for the interns which I feel were beneficial to get to know the other people that I would be working with.
Due to the fact that on arrival at the firm I was given a buddy and a counsellor, I feel that the company invested heavily in making sure that I felt welcome. They also invested in various social activities that I feel helped my social skills and made me feel more comfortable in asking questions around the office.

Working from home
Although I am yet to hear if I have got a job offer after my internship, I would definitely take up the opportunity to work for them. The internship gave me a valuable insight into working for the firm and I feel like it would definitely be a place that I’d like to work in the future.
The Culture
Yes, especially amongst the other interns. We all had various social events organised by recruitment that allowed us to get to know one another. Also within our office, there was a social committee that often organised nights out or lunches which I feel helped to get to know the people I was working with.
During my internship I had the benefit of living at home therefore didn’t experience the cost of living. The cost of socialising I found was fairly cheap, there were a variety of bars and restaurants near the office therefore we had a lot of choice in where we wanted to go.
My internship was in Edinburgh and I thought that the nightlife nearby was good. There are a variety of bars to go to and they always seemed to be busy. Although the internship was only 6 weeks, myself and the other interns still had the chance to make the most out of the nightlife.
Yes, I felt that there were plenty of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. The second day of our internship we had the opportunity to do a CSR day where we worked for a tree planting charity. This activity was a bit different and gave us the chance to get to know one another which was good.
