    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have really enjoyed my time here at RBS. It has been a challenging but relaxed internship, and I have felt very welcomed within the team, and with the other interns. It has been a good mix between work and events (like after work events, the CSR challenge & volunteering days).

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have felt that the work I have completed has been valued by my colleagues, and will be used after I am gone. However I would've liked more responsibility with assisting with projects within my team, but I have felt that the work I have completed has been recognised and appreciated within the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have always felt supported by my manager and my grad buddy, and never felt like there wasn't someone I could turn to with a problem or question. Obviously as this internship is during the summer, there were some weeks where I was on my own as people took annual leave, but I always had work to complete while they weren't in office.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • With my internship project being a huge part of my time here, I always had something I could work on. However, I would have appreciated more technical work and responsibilities from my team, and would have preferred to be a bit busier than I have been some weeks, with more variety in the work I was doing.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • When given a task to do, I was given a quick brief of what was wanted from this task, but had a lot of responsibility and freedom around how I went about completing the task, and the end product. I really liked this way of working, however I feel I could have been given more technical responsibilities rather than mostly admin stuff.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • From this internship, I have received a lot of experience in building my confidence, speaking to people, and conducting a professional presentation. As someone who has previously struggled with all of these things, I feel the internship has benefitted me greatly and helped me develop skills that will be very useful in my future career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was quite good. It has a very relaxed atmosphere, with the opportunity to wear comfortable clothes every day rather than smart/professional outfits if you wanted to. Everybody was super friendly! The only issue I had was that people 'claim' computers as theirs without booking them, and if you booked them for yourself it could get a bit uncomfortable. But overall, it was good.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I had some issues with the 2nd introduction day being a bit long and stretched out for the content that was actually spoken about. The CSR council and process wasn't great, as it would take forever for us to hear back about our business plan, or any questions we had, which became frustrating for us. Apart from those two things, the internship has been good and well thought out.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had the opportunity to access the Data Academy and teach myself about new coding software, and also was encouraged and sent other packs to learn how to code in different software, too. I was put forward for an internal 3-day training course in SAS, and took part in a Virtualitics focus group as well. Overall, I felt like I was encouraged to do a lot of personal training & development during my time here.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing - it seems that RBS care a lot about their employees and offer them a lot of flexibility with hours, working from home, and juggling any other personal commitments, as well as being a very inclusive bank. All these things, especially working from home, sound great to me and would be something that I look for in an employer.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes! There were a few organised nights out between the grads and interns, but a lot of the time us interns would organise our own days & nights out. Everyone was very friendly, social and we all get along well together and I have had a very good time hanging out with everyone else on this internship!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I actually live where my internship is based, so my cost of living was no different to usual. Socialising, depending on where you go or what kind of night out you wanted, could be quite expensive (unless you go to Spoons!). I feel like we found a good balance though, and didn't end up spending too much money.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Edinburgh can be quite good! There's loads of different bars with different price ranges to go drink at, and loads of clubs for different music tastes, too. Our internship has fallen over the Fringe as well, so we've been having a great time going to all the shows!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I had the opportunity to go on a volunteering day with my department, which was so much fun and it felt great giving back to the community. The Grad Council organised a few events after hours for the grads & interns, however they weren't hyped up enough - and it would've been good if there was more of them, as well, to help the grads & interns mingle a bit more!
