The Role
The job was one of the best internships I have had, mainly because of the team: the team were very well qualified and always supportive, which meant I could progress very well with my project. The project itself was sufficiently challenging and I could learn a lot from it. Would definitely recommend.
Very: the team were always supportive and were always willing to help. And on top of this, and important aspect of the internship was that the team had selected a project that will be going to production at the end of the internship, which meant I felt a sense of impact.
I was given sufficient support and guidance. The team is generally quite busy, so I was encouraged to try and do as much as possible by myself, but when a serious issue presented itself, or there was something that was blocking my progress, I was able to ask for help at any time.
As much as I wanted to be: the basic project was quite simple, to factor in that many people on the internship may not be as technically proficient as the others, but if further responsibility is sought after, it will always be given and there will always be something else to do.
The base responsibilty was fairly light, but one aspect of the internship I really enjoyed was that I wasn't at all limited by how much responsibilty I had/ could get. When finishing my base project, I was able to ask for further responsibility and to work on more real team projects.
A lot: one of the most excisting aspects of the internship was working with some very new technology, such as react and redux, both of which are very impactful technologies in industry but are not covered in my university course. In addition to this, it was very good to have actual software engineering practice.
The Company
The general atmosphere is quite open: the team is quite hard working and focussed, but if you need to ask any questions, you always have the opportunity to go to someone's desk and see how they can help. In addition, everyone is friendly, and there were plenty of networking events to meet other people.
Very well: the project was prepared and thought through before I arrived, so that it would suffice as an intern project. Each week had well co-ordinated events, both for networking and to get an overall understanding of the firm and it's values, and managers and buddies were encouraged to also hold meetings and chats with us.
Quite well: the project I was given used the same technologies that the actual full time team use, so there was a lot of exposure to industry quality code and principles. Being new to this kind of environemnt, the team invested quite a bit of time in explanations so that I could understand what I was doing and that I would have an impact through the internship.
Flexi Time
Financial Bonus
Some of the opportunities at BAML can be very exciting. I am quite impressed with the level of internal mobility that is presented, so that if you want to try something new or want to do something more closely alligned to your skillset, you have the chance to move to another team quite easily.
The Culture
Yes, definitely a lot. Bank of america has a lot of connections to outside companies, which meant invites to events run by startups/ smaller businesses that work with the bank for networking. There were also lots of HR organised events such as an escape room, and inter bank events such as the 2019 JPMC run.
